Julian Brandt Leads Borussia Dortmund to 2-0 Victory Over Newcastle, Dashing English Team's Last-16 Hopes

Borussia Dortmund secured a convincing 2-0 home win against Newcastle on Tuesday, dealing a severe blow to the English side's hopes of advancing to the Champions League knockout phase. Returning to the competition after a two-decade absence, Newcastle's aspirations took a hit as they were outclassed by the German team throughout the match.
Niclas Fuellkrug found the net in the first half, and Julian Brandt sealed the victory in the 79th minute. This win temporarily placed Dortmund at the top of Group F with two matches remaining, giving them a three-point lead over Newcastle and the head-to-head advantage.
After suffering a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich just days ago, Dortmund bounced back to hold a strong English team scoreless. Julian Brandt commented on the victory, saying, "When you concede four goals in this stadium three days ago, it feels good to hold a very good English team to nil — and the two goals will do us good."
Paris Saint-Germain can regain the lead in the group if they avoid defeat against AC Milan later on Tuesday.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe acknowledged his team's subpar performance, stating, "We weren't at our best tonight. Our intensity, our quality was missing, but that said we still had our moments." To advance, the Magpies realistically need to win their remaining games against PSG and Milan.
Dortmund coach Edin Terzic praised his team's "really good performance as a complete team," highlighting their solid defensive efforts. Dortmund began the match confidently, with Fuellkrug and Karim Adeyemi unleashing powerful shots at Newcastle's goal within the first 15 minutes.
The breakthrough came in the first half when Fuellkrug, 12 months after making his Germany debut, scored his first Champions League goal by prodding in a cross from Marcel Sabitzer.
Throughout the match, Felix Nmecha and Julian Brandt controlled the midfield, keeping Newcastle's undermanned defense at bay. In the second half, both sides had opportunities, but it was Brandt who doubled Dortmund's lead with a well-timed goal in the late stages of the game.
Dortmund's victory means they are the only team to defeat Newcastle in the English team's last 13 matches, having now done so twice in two weeks.
