Katie Boulter defeats Marta Kostyuk in San Diego to claim second career title

Katie Boulter, hailing from Britain, emerged victorious on Sunday as she secured the most significant championship of her professional journey. She triumphed over Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine, aged 21, with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, ultimately clinching the prestigious WTA San Diego Open title.

The British player, who had previously only won the WTA title in Nottingham the previous June, has entered the top 30 in the world rankings for the first time in her career. Boulter surprised the third-seed Emma Navarro of the United States in the semi-finals.

Kostyuk, ranked 34th, defeated the top-seeded Jessica Pegula to reach the final but struggled after winning the first set against the British player. After a rain delay in the final, Boulter conceded the hard-fought first set to the Ukrainian on her seventh set point due to a double fault but gained momentum after coming back from a 5-2 deficit to draw level at 5-5.

Taking advantage of the momentum, she dominated the second set, taking a 3-1 lead with a superb forehand winner down the line and then breaking serve again for a 5-2 lead, eventually winning the set and forcing a third set.

As Kostyuk lost steam, Boulter's confidence grew, breaking her opponent twice before finishing the match with two powerful aces in the final game.

Boulter capitalized on 7 out of 11 break points and saved 7 out of the 11 break points she faced in a victory that will propel her to 27th in the world rankings. "I really didn't think I would be standing here with a trophy right now, I really didn't," stated Boulter, who was supported by her Australian boyfriend Alex de Minaur, who flew in after winning the ATP title in Acapulco on Saturday.
