Kenya's Korir Claims Chicago Marathon Men's Title with Personal Best

John Korir, a 27-year-old athlete from Kenya, secured the men's title at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, achieving a personal best time of 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 44 seconds. This victory came as participants paid heartfelt homage to the late Kelvin Kiptum.
Korir celebrated his inaugural major marathon win, finishing ahead of Ethiopia's Mohamed Esa, who clocked in at 2:04:39, and fellow Kenyan Amos Kipruto, who finished with a time of 2:04:50.
At the 30-kilometer mark, Korir was part of a leading group of seven runners before he accelerated, distancing himself from his competitors.
Among the top five finishers, four were from Kenya, with Vincent Ngetich and Daniel Ebenyo finishing just outside the podium positions.
"It was truly wonderful to achieve my personal best and win in Chicago," Korir remarked, noting that he drew inspiration from Kiptum's world record performance at the same marathon last year.
"Today, I reflected on Kiptum and thought, 'if he could run under 2:01 last year, why can't I?' I had to trust in myself and strive to perform at my best."
Kiptum set the world record with a time of 2:00:35 in Chicago in October 2023, but tragically passed away at the age of 24 just four months later in a car accident in his home country of Kenya.
