Kevin Durant scores 39, leads Phoenix Suns past Utah Jazz 140-137 in Double Overtime

In a thrilling Sunday night showdown, the Phoenix Suns clinched a heart-stopping 140-137 victory in double overtime against the Utah Jazz, propelled by a stellar performance from Kevin Durant. The atmosphere crackled with tension and excitement as Durant dominated the court, amassing a staggering 39 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds.

This win marked the Suns’ third consecutive triumph and their second triumph over the Jazz in just three days, solidifying their prowess on the court. Devin Booker showcased his prowess by contributing 26 points, 22 of which were scored after halftime, accompanied by an impressive eight assists. The supporting cast came through as well, with Eric Gordon notching up 20 points, Jusuf Nurkic contributing 18, and Grayson Allen concluding with 14 points.

Durant, reflecting on the game, highlighted their consistent momentum on the offensive end, especially through the crucial periods of the fourth quarter and the intense double overtimes.

On the opposing side, Lauri Markkanen emerged as a standout performer for the Utah Jazz, accumulating a remarkable 38 points and securing 17 rebounds, while Talen Horton-Tucker added 25 points and Jordan Clarkson contributed 22. Collin Sexton and John Collins also made significant contributions with 18 and 15 points respectively.

Despite Utah's commendable efforts, they faced a setback, losing despite securing a 27-18 advantage in second-chance points and a 26-12 edge in fastbreak points. Coach Will Hardy acknowledged some defensive lapses, particularly in the late stages of the game and overtime, attributing some of it to fatigue.

The nail-biting climax of the game saw Durant’s back-to-back baskets and three free throws granting the Suns a 135-130 lead in the second overtime. The Jazz, however, managed to tie the game with under a minute remaining. Grayson Allen's timely counter with a crucial 3-pointer denied Utah their chance to seize the lead after regulation.

Suns coach Frank Vogel commended his team’s resilience in overtime situations, expressing confidence in their ability to navigate such pressure-packed moments and seal the win.

A pivotal moment arrived when a contentious foul call on Durant's block against Markkanen in the dying seconds of the game initially threatened to send Markkanen to the free-throw line for three shots, potentially forcing a third overtime. However, after review, the officials overturned the call, affirming that Durant had cleanly blocked the shot.

Durant, relieved by the correct decision, expressed certainty in his block and voiced understanding of the review process in critical moments. Markkanen, on the other hand, expressed surprise at the reversal, believing he had been fouled and prepared to take the free throws.

The game saw the Jazz staging remarkable comebacks, rallying from an 11-point deficit in the first half and persistently trailing before forcing overtime with Markkanen's clutch putback layup.

Looking ahead, the Suns are set to host Portland in an NBA In-Season Tournament game, while the Jazz will travel to face the Los Angeles Lakers in their next tournament fixture.
