King and Lewis Lead West Indies to T20 Victory Over Sri Lanka
A stunning exhibition of power hitting by Brandon King (29) and Evin Lewis (32) led the West Indies to a decisive five-wicket triumph in the first T20 match against Sri Lanka on Sunday.
The West Indies successfully chased down the target of 180 with five balls remaining, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
"It is crucial to secure an early advantage when playing in Sri Lanka, as they are a formidable team on home soil," remarked West Indies captain Rovman Powell.
He emphasized the importance of "throwing the first punch" and maintaining dominance once established.
The run chase commenced with an explosive start, as King and Lewis combined to score 74 runs during the six-over powerplay, placing Sri Lanka on the back foot.
King was the first to achieve his half-century, elegantly executing a cover drive for four runs off Matheesha Pathirana.
He reached his 50 in just 25 balls, with Lewis following closely behind, requiring only 27 deliveries for his own half-century.
"My objective was to provide the team with a strong start, and it worked out well," King stated.
The pair amassed a remarkable 107 runs in merely nine overs for the opening wicket.
This partnership marked the highest for the West Indies against Sri Lanka in T20 cricket for any wicket.
The partnership was eventually broken when Pathirana outsmarted Lewis with a slower delivery, resulting in an edge to Chamindu Wickramasinghe at backward point.
King continued to shine, finishing as the top scorer with an impressive 63 runs off 33 balls, which included 11 fours and a six.
With the openers having laid a solid foundation, the middle order focused on rotating the strike, accumulating singles and taking calculated risks to secure the victory.
Sri Lanka made efforts to recover by claiming a few wickets, but the damage inflicted by the opening duo left the hosts in a nearly insurmountable position.
All-rounder Roston Chase and captain Powell stabilized the innings, contributing 32 runs for the fourth wicket.
Powell was dismissed for 13 in the 17th over, misjudging an attempt at a straight six off Maheesh Theekshana, leading to a catch by Wanindu Hasaranga at long-on.
Chase was dismissed for 19 runs, caught behind off the bowling of Pathirana, yet the task was nearly accomplished.
Despite heavy rainfall threatening to halt the match, the prompt actions of the ground staff enabled play to resume after a 30-minute interruption.
Earlier in the match, half-centuries from Kamindu Mendis and Charith Asalanka propelled Sri Lanka to a seemingly competitive total of 179, with the duo contributing an impressive 82-run partnership off just 54 balls for the fourth wicket.
However, this total fell short against the aggressive West Indian openers, who effectively dismantled Sri Lanka's bowling lineup.
"Whatever we attempted today did not yield the desired results, but we will return after addressing several concerns," stated captain Asalanka.
"The positive aspect for us is that we are playing commendable cricket."
The West Indies currently hold the third position in the global T20 rankings, while Sri Lanka finds itself in eighth place.
The remaining two T20 matches of the series, also scheduled in Dambulla, will take place on October 15th and 17th, after which the teams will move to Pallekele for a three-match ODI series.
