Kings Keep NBA Play-In Dreams Alive with Clutch Win Over Cavaliers

The Sacramento Kings reignited their postseason hopes with a gritty 120-113 road win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night, powered by a vintage Zach LaVine performance and a statement third-quarter surge.

LaVine torched the Cavs with seven 3-pointers, including three daggers in the fourth quarter, en route to a game-high 37 points. The win elevates the Kings to ninth in the Western Conference (38-40), edging them past the Dallas Mavericks by half a game and keeping their NBA Play-In Tournament ambitions alive.

Clutch Kings Deny Cavaliers Top Seed

The result not only boosted Sacramento's playoff momentum but also denied the Cavaliers (62-16) the opportunity to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference, adding a dramatic twist to the NBA postseason race.

This marks the second win over the Cavaliers this season for the Kings, underlining their late-season resilience.

Key Performances

  • Zach LaVine: 37 PTS (7 3PM), 4 AST
  • DeMar DeRozan: 28 PTS, 7 AST
  • Domantas Sabonis: 27 PTS, 9 REB, 7 AST
  • Ty Jerome (Cavs): 20 PTS (off the bench)
  • Donovan Mitchell: 19 PTS, 7 REB, 6 AST
  • Jarrett Allen: 17 PTS
  • Evan Mobley: 16 PTS, 9 REB, 3 BLK

Sabonis, who continues to shine as one of the NBA's most consistent big men, scored 19 of his 27 in the first half and knocked down a deep three-pointer late in the first quarter to put Sacramento ahead 31-27.

Controversy in the Clutch

With 46.1 seconds left and the Kings clinging to a 116-111 lead, LaVine delivered a strong left-handed layup. However, replay footage suggested the ball may still have been in his hand as the shot clock expired. The play was not reviewed, sparking post-game debate among fans and analysts.

Injury Scare for Mitchell

Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell caused concern when he appeared to tweak his left ankle in a collision with Keon Ellis during the third quarter. Mitchell exited the game for over six minutes but returned to finish the contest, albeit not at full intensity.

Sacramento capitalized, closing the third quarter on a 24-6 run to take a commanding 91-79 lead into the final frame.

Bench Impact and Momentum Swings

The Cavaliers got a major lift from Isaac Okoro, who returned from a shoulder injury to spark a 10-0 run in the second quarter. Okoro’s sequence included a drive, a triple, and a momentum-shifting putback, giving Cleveland its biggest lead of the night at 45-39.

But the Kings weren't fazed. In the final 50 seconds of the first half, DeRozan nailed a baseline jumper, LaVine added a slicing layup, and Ellis banked in a buzzer-beating half-court three-pointer to cut the Cavs’ halftime lead to 57-56.
