Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins step up in Warriors 118-114 victory over Blazers as Stephen Curry's 3-point streak ends at 268 games

On Sunday, the Golden State Warriors secured their second consecutive win as Klay Thompson contributed 28 points to the team's victory. Notably, this game also marked the end of Stephen Curry's impressive NBA-record 3-pointer streak, which had spanned across 268 games. Despite this, the Warriors managed to hold off the Portland Trail Blazers, emerging victorious with a final score of 118-114.
"We cannot always rely on Steph to rescue us every single night," stated Warriors coach Steve Kerr. "Although it was a challenging night for him, that's what being a team is all about. Each player stepping up and supporting one another. This is a positive sign because Steph has carried us for a significant portion of the year. We need to provide him with more assistance."
Curry, the NBA's all-time leader in career three-pointers, recently achieved his 3,500th three-pointer. The last time he went without a three-pointer in a regular-season game was on November 8, 2018, when he went 0 for 4 against Milwaukee. He also holds the second-longest streak in the NBA with 157 consecutive games.
Andrew Wiggins, who was recently removed from the Golden State starting lineup, contributed 25 points and seven rebounds.
"He showcased his versatility by rebounding, hitting three-pointers, and playing above the rim," Thompson praised Wiggins. "That's the Wigs we admire."
Kerr added, "That performance resembled the vintage Andrew. That's the player I am familiar with."
Rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis played a crucial role with 14 points and eight rebounds, helping the Warriors secure back-to-back victories for the first time since their five-game winning streak in early November.
Jerami Grant led Portland with 30 points, while Anfernee Simons scored all 21 of his points in the second half.
Portland managed to narrow the gap to 113-111 with 39 seconds remaining. Chris Paul's jumper extended the Warriors' lead to 115-111 with 20.9 seconds left, and Simon's 3-point play brought it to 115-114 with 14.7 seconds on the clock.
"Chris Paul demonstrated his clutch ability by hitting those shots at the end," Thompson acknowledged Paul's performance, who scored all four of his points in the final 2:26.
After Curry made one of two free throws, making it 116-114, Portland's Shaedon Sharpe was charged with an offensive foul with 0.6 seconds remaining. Although Portland had a timeout remaining, they chose not to call one as Sharpe attacked the basket, resulting in Golden State's Brandin Podziemski drawing the game-sealing foul.
"Upon entering the game, my initial thought was to secure a rebound and call a timeout," expressed Portland coach Chauncey Billups. "However, we swiftly moved the ball and began our aggressive offensive approach, which made me reconsider calling a timeout. As the play progressed, we couldn't effectively advance the ball. If Shae had halted his attack, I would have called a timeout. But since he continued to attack, I believed in allowing the young player to figure it out."
