Knicks through to the quarter-finals of the In-Season Tournament via wildcard spot after defeating Hornets 115-91

The New York Knicks found themselves in the unexpected position of plotting a course to Las Vegas. Their journey, however, took an intriguing turn: Milwaukee emerged as their actual destination. To secure a spot in the coveted Final Four in Vegas, they needed a triumph over the formidable Bucks.

Navigating the uncharted waters of the NBA's freshly introduced In-Season Tournament, even the players were in the midst of deciphering its mechanics and workings.

The Knicks propelled themselves into the quarterfinals with an impressive 115-91 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Julius Randle, showcasing remarkable prowess, notched an outstanding 25 points and 20 rebounds, while RJ Barrett contributed 16 points to the Knicks' triumph.

Immanuel Quickley, a reserve guard, candidly revealed the team's initial presumption: "We all thought we were going to Vegas, I cannot lie." The elation of victory sparked comparisons to a trip to Disney World after winning the Super Bowl.

Despite falling short of securing the top spot in Group B—a privilege claimed by the Bucks—the Knicks clinched a wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference due to their superior point differential during the preliminary rounds. The impending showdown against the conference's top-seeded team loomed on the horizon, slated for the following Tuesday.

The Knicks, already scheduled to face the Bucks four times in the season, found themselves with an added fixture against a formidable contender for the NBA Finals—a game that could determine their ticket to Las Vegas.

Coach Tom Thibodeau adopted a pragmatic stance: “If they tell us we got to play this team five times, we play them five times and be ready.” His emphasis on adaptability underscored the team's readiness for whatever the schedule dictated.

The Knicks' bench emerged as a force to be reckoned with, outscoring the Hornets' bench 50-35, with Quickley racking up 23 points and Josh Hart adding 17.

However, Hart expressed reservations about the tournament's format, particularly the pressure to run up the score to advance from the group stage, which, in his view, compromised the integrity of the game.

The Hornets, missing their star point guard LaMelo Ball due to a significant right ankle injury, struggled to find their rhythm, culminating in a season-low score of 91 points.

Despite a resilient effort from the Hornets, the Knicks held firm control, with their lead momentarily threatened before seizing a commanding advantage, ultimately entering the fourth quarter with an imposing 80-66 lead.

Randle and Barrett's combined efforts propelled the Knicks to a 53-44 lead at halftime, setting the stage for their subsequent dominance.

Looking ahead, the Hornets would face off against the Brooklyn Nets, while the Knicks were set to host the Detroit Pistons, each team navigating its path in this pulsating NBA season.
