Kohli's confrontation with Konstas casts Indian star in controversial spotlight

Virat Kohli's behavior during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne on Thursday attracted scrutiny following a shoulder clash with debutant Sam Konstas, aged 19. However, this incident did not seem to disrupt the young Australian's performance.

On the first day of play, as Konstas dominated India's bowlers, Kohli faced boos from the crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground after colliding with the teenager while approaching his opening partner, Usman Khawaja, at the conclusion of the 10th over.

The two players confronted each other and exchanged remarks, leading umpire Michael Gough and Khawaja to intervene and ease the tension.

Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain and commentator for the Seven Network, indicated that Kohli was clearly at fault in this situation.

"That man (Kohli) might have a few questions to answer," Ponting remarked. "When you’re batting, the batsman has ownership of the wicket. The crease belongs to him, particularly during such intervals."

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, also attributed responsibility to Kohli, stating, "Virat Kohli is such an experienced professional, yet he is being provoked by a 19-year-old. It is Kohli who initiated the contact with Sam."

Konstas, who stepped in for the dropped Nathan McSweeney, remained unfazed by the incident, hitting Jasprit Bumrah for four runs on the very next delivery and following it up with a six over the bowler's head, accumulating 18 runs in that over.

After Australia concluded the day at 311 for six, Konstas downplayed the encounter, saying, "I think he accidentally bumped into me, but that’s just part of cricket; it’s all about the tension."

The International Cricket Council (ICC) prohibits "inappropriate physical contact," and players found guilty of such actions may face suspensions if deemed serious.

Reports from Indian media suggest that Kohli accepted a 20% reduction in his match fee along with one demerit point, allowing him to participate in the fifth and final Test in Sydney. The ICC has yet to publicly confirm this sanction.

India's assistant coach Abhishek Nayar informed reporters that he had not witnessed the incident in question, emphasizing that heightened emotions are a natural occurrence in significant matches.

"However, I am quite certain that it is not as serious as it appears," he remarked.

Batting star Kohli had previously broken a poor run of form with a century in the series opener in Perth, yet he has only accumulated 21 runs across three innings since then in the series.

With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86°F) in the morning, his mood may have been further affected by Konstas surviving a nick off Bumrah that narrowly evaded him in the slips.

Earlier, Kohli had openly laughed at Konstas when the young player mishandled two attempts to scoop Bumrah behind the wicket.

Konstas ultimately succeeded on his next three attempts with the T20-style shot, hitting boundaries each time.

He was eventually dismissed for 60 runs off 65 balls, falling lbw to Ravindra Jadeja just before lunch.
