Kolo Muani late strike sends France into last eight over Belgium

France secured their place in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Belgium, marking their fifth consecutive victory against their opponents at a major tournament.
The highly anticipated match between two top-three FIFA ranked nations started off slowly, with both teams struggling to create significant chances in the opening stages.
Despite the presence of star players Kylian Mbappe and Romelu Lukaku, it wasn't until midway through the first half that either team managed to test the opposing goalkeeper.
Mike Maignan was forced into action by a deflected free-kick from Kevin De Bruyne, which seemed to wake up the French team.
They eventually created the best opportunity of the half with a long pass from Aurelien Tchouameni finding Jules Kounde, whose cross was narrowly missed by Marcus Thuram.
The French managed to register just one shot on target in the first half, but quickly matched that number within the first five minutes of the second half.
Tchouaméni continued to dominate the midfield, taking a shot from 25 yards that forced a great save from Koen Casteels.
On the other hand, the Red Devils struggled to create consistent attacking opportunities, but found a golden chance when De Bruyne's pass set Yannick Carrasco free.
However, a last-minute block from Theo Hernandez prevented what seemed like a sure goal.
Despite France's pressure, Belgium seemed to have the better chances. De Bruyne received a perfect pass 20 yards from goal, but Maignan's save denied him, hinting at a potential extra time.
Randal Kolo Muani changed the game's course, scoring a deflected goal off Jan Vertonghen, which was later considered an own goal.
This stroke of luck proved to be decisive, leading France to victory and setting up a match against either Portugal or Slovenia on Friday.
Belgium, on the other hand, faced disappointment once again, with their 'Golden Generation' falling short in crucial moments.
