Krejcikova reigns supreme in San Diego; grabs both Singles and Doubles titles

Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic won the WTA 500 Cymbiotika San Diego Open on Saturday, defeating Sofia Kenin of the United States 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Krejcikova, the 2021 Roland Garros champion, defeated 2020 Australian Open champion Kenin in 2 hours and 38 minutes to win her seventh career Hologic WTA Tour singles title. With the win, Krejcikova improved to 2-0 against Kenin.

Krejcikova was pushed to her limit in the final by former World No.4 Kenin, who was competing in her first tour final since finishing runner-up at Roland Garros in 2020 nearly three years ago.

Krejcikova came back from a break down twice in the first set, eventually claiming the one-set lead by carving a deft forehand into the forecourt to force a Kenin error.

Kenin, on the other hand, broke serve in the first game of the second set, then saved four break points during a 4-2 hold to keep her lead. Kenin slammed an ace to close out the second set, in which the American had the same number of winners as Krejcikova but six fewer unforced errors.

Both players locked down their service games in the decisive third set, with no break points for either player through 4-4. In the decider, Krejcikova was the first to face break points, and the Czech erased four in a hold for 5-4, preventing Kenin from serving for the title.

In the next game, Krejcikova earned her first set break points, which also counted as championship points. On her first championship point, Krejcikova netted a return, but Kenin sent a backhand wide on the second, and Krejcikova returned to the winner's circle.

Krejcikova and Siniakova claim their third doubles title for the season

Krejcikova returned to the court shortly after winning the singles title to win the doubles title as well. She and regular partner Katerina Siniakova defeated the wild-card pairing of Danielle Collins and CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-4.

Krejcikova and Siniakova, the top seeds, have won 16 doubles titles together, including seven Grand Slams. They hadn't won a championship since winning Indian Wells in March, but the Czechs won this week after a 66-minute final.
