Kroos announces shock decision to retire from football after Euro 2024

Real Madrid icon Toni Kroos (34) has declared his retirement from professional football after the European Championships with Germany this summer.

Speculation about Kroos' future has been ongoing for several months due to his contract expiring in June, but the German star has now confirmed his decision to hang up his boots.

"On July 17th, 2014, the day of my unveiling at Real Madrid, my life changed forever. It marked the beginning of a new chapter at the world's biggest club," he expressed in a statement.

"After a decade, this chapter will conclude at the end of the season. I will forever cherish this incredibly successful period! I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who welcomed me warmly and placed their trust in me. Above all, I want to thank you, dear Madridistas, for your unwavering support and love from day one till the end.

"This decision also signifies the end of my playing career this summer following the Euro championship.

"I am content and proud that I have found the right moment for this decision and that I made it on my own terms. My goal was always to retire at the peak of my abilities. Moving forward, there is only one thought in my mind: a por la 15!!! HALA MADRID Y NADA MAS!"

Kroos' final match for Real Madrid will be in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium, while he will bid farewell to the German national team at the European Championships on home soil.

Throughout his illustrious career, Kroos secured one World Cup, five Champions League trophies, as well as four LaLiga and three Bundesliga titles.
