LA Galaxy hold off Red Bulls to claim sixth MLS Cup

The Los Angeles Galaxy triumphed over the New York Red Bulls with a score of 2-1, securing a record-extending sixth MLS Cup title on Saturday and ending a decade-long championship drought for the prestigious Major League Soccer club. Goals from Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic in the first half were pivotal for the Galaxy, who played in front of 26,812 enthusiastic fans under sunny skies at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
This victory marks a remarkable turnaround for the Galaxy, who had finished just above the bottom of the Western Conference last season, recording their poorest regular season performance to date. Historically dominant in MLS during the David Beckham era, the Galaxy appeared to have the advantage in Saturday's final against a Red Bulls team that had advanced to the championship match following an impressive postseason run.
"I am immensely proud of this team," stated Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney after the match.
"From the very beginning of my tenure here, we committed to this vision... Even during last year's challenging season, we remained dedicated."
The win was particularly gratifying for Vanney, who had previously experienced defeat in three MLS Cup finals as a player.
"It feels rewarding because I faced defeat three times as a player," Vanney confessed.
The Galaxy seized control of the final with a stunning early performance, taking a 2-0 lead within the first 13 minutes. Defensive adjustments were necessary for New York, as center-back Andres Reyes fell ill just before the match commenced, prompting a last-minute change. This situation led to Noah Eile making his first start in over two months, and the 22-year-old Swede's lack of recent competitive play was quickly exploited by the Galaxy's dynamic offense.
Eile was caught off guard during the Galaxy's opening goal, inadvertently playing Paintsil onside after Gaston Brugman's expertly placed through ball split the Red Bulls' defense. Paintsil capitalized on the opportunity, finishing confidently by slotting the ball past the advancing Red Bulls goalkeeper, Carlos Coronel, to establish a 1-0 lead.
The stadium erupted in celebration as Paintsil raised a Galaxy shirt emblazoned with the name of the injured star Riqui Puig, who was applauding from the sidelines. With New York struggling to regain their composure, Galaxy maintained their aggressive approach. In the 12th minute, Serbian international Joveljic sent a powerful shot just over the crossbar, and a minute later, he doubled the lead to 2-0.
Eile found himself out of position once more, allowing Joveljic ample time and space to advance from midfield and skillfully finish past Coronel with the outside of his right foot into the bottom corner.
Following Galaxy's second goal, it appeared that the Red Bulls, lacking form, had no path to recovery. However, Sandro Schwarz's squad managed to regroup and re-enter the contest just before the half-hour mark.
A corner taken by Swedish international Emil Forsberg from the left created chaos in the penalty area. After Galaxy failed to clear the ball, it fell to Sean Nealis, who controlled it with his chest and volleyed it into the net.
The sequence initiated a prolonged period of pressure for New York, during which Cameron Harper and Eile both forced saves from Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy in the 31st and 34th minutes.
However, Los Angeles maintained a more incisive approach during counterattacks, and Eile's challenging first half took a turn for the worse when he received a yellow card for a reckless bodycheck on Joveljic.
In first half stoppage time, Joveljic nearly secured his second goal of the match, but his attempt following a cross from Miki Yamane was comfortably collected by Coronel.
Following the interval, Galaxy continued to create opportunities, with Paintsil narrowly missing the target with a curling shot in the 55th minute, and Japan's Miki Yamane striking the woodwork midway through the half.
A remarkable reflex save from Coronel thwarted Joveljic in the 72nd minute, yet New York came close to equalizing with a counter-attack that culminated in Forsberg's shot striking the outside of the post.
In a climactic final few minutes, Galaxy believed they had secured victory when referee Guido Gonzales blew the whistle deep into stoppage time. The stadium erupted in celebration, but players and support staff were instructed to leave the field as Gonzales indicated that play would resume, before the match ultimately concluded shortly thereafter.
Red Bulls captain Forsberg expressed disappointment over his team's sluggish start but took pride in their resilience in recovering during the match.
"We played a very good game, to be honest," the Swedish player remarked.
"I'm proud of the team for how we fought back. The first 20 minutes were somewhat disorganized on our part, which allowed them to score two quick goals.
"This experience fuels our motivation for next year. We are now eager for more. I believe we demonstrated our potential as a cohesive team."
