LAFC edge past Whitecaps to advance in MLS playoffs

Polish international Mateusz Bogusz netted the sole goal as Los Angeles FC triumphed over the Vancouver Whitecaps with a score of 1-0, securing their advancement in the Major League Soccer playoff series on Friday.
Bogusz's decisive strike in the 62nd minute concluded a closely contested match at LAFC's BMO Stadium, resulting in a 2-1 aggregate victory in the best-of-three first-round series.
As the top seeds in the Western Conference, Los Angeles had previously suffered a 3-0 defeat to the eighth-seeded Whitecaps in the second game of the series on Sunday.
Nevertheless, Steve Cherundolo's team showcased a significantly improved defensive performance, effectively stifling Vancouver's efforts for extended periods during the decisive match.
The breakthrough occurred midway through the second half when Los Angeles capitalized on a careless clearance from Vancouver goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.
Takaoka's attempted clearance found Los Angeles defender Aaron Long, who directed the ball forward towards the edge of the penalty area.
The ball was then played into the path of Bogusz, whose first touch allowed him to maneuver past Ranko Veselinovic before unleashing a powerful low shot into the bottom corner of the net.
In response to the goal, Vancouver increased their intensity but found it challenging to create significant scoring opportunities as they sought an equalizer that could have led to a penalty shoot-out.
In the 74th minute, centre-back Tristan Blackmon managed to put the ball in the Los Angeles net, but his header was correctly adjudged to be offside.
