Lakers acquire Luka Dončić, send Anthony Davis to Mavericks

The NBA landscape has been shaken by a blockbuster trade that will see Luka Dončić join the Los Angeles Lakers, while Anthony Davis heads to the Dallas Mavericks, according to an early Sunday morning report from ESPN. The deal, which also includes multiple players and draft picks, has sent shockwaves through the league.

While Dončić and Davis are the focal points of the trade, the Lakers will also receive Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, while the Mavericks will add Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick to their roster. Additionally, Utah has been included in the deal, acquiring Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-round pick via the Los Angeles Clippers, while Dallas is also sending a 2025 second-round pick to the Jazz.

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison expressed confidence in the trade, emphasizing its defensive benefits. "I believe that defense wins championships. I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We're built to win now and in the future," Harrison told ESPN.

Dallas initiated the trade talks, offering Dončić to Los Angeles, with the Lakers reportedly viewing the five-time All-Star as a future face of the franchise. For now, the Slovenian guard will team up with LeBron James, who is currently in his 22nd NBA season. ESPN also reported that James was unaware of the trade, learning about it while having dinner with his family on Saturday night. Similarly, Dončić, Davis, and multiple players and coaches were left in the dark until the deal was finalized.

Both Dončić and Davis are currently sidelined due to injuries. Dončić has not played since Christmas Day due to a strained left calf, while Davis suffered an abdominal muscle strain on Tuesday. A return date for Dončić has yet to be set, though the Mavericks initially stated he would be re-evaluated in a month. Davis, on the other hand, is expected to be re-evaluated next week.

Dončić’s availability has been a growing concern for Dallas, and ESPN noted that the Mavericks were frustrated with his conditioning and diet, believing those factors contributed to his frequent injuries. That frustration ultimately played a role in the decision to trade him.

In addition to Dončić and Davis, Kleber has been out since Jan. 25 with a fractured right foot, while Hood-Schifino, who was rarely used by the Lakers, has been sidelined since Dec. 1 with a strained left hamstring.

This season, Dončić has played 22 games, averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists. He has spent his entire seven-year NBA career with the Mavericks after being drafted third overall in 2018 by the Atlanta Hawks, who traded his rights to Dallas in exchange for Trae Young. Davis, a 10-time All-Star, has been dominant for the Lakers, averaging 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.1 blocks over 42 games this season.

Kleber, who just turned 33, has played 34 games, contributing 3.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. Morris, 35, has appeared in seven games off the bench, averaging 1.7 points and 1.1 rebounds. Hood-Schifino, at just 21 years old, has played two games, scoring 2.0 points per contest.

As of Saturday night, the Lakers sit fifth in the Western Conference with a 28-19 record, while the Mavericks are eighth at 26-23. The trade reshapes the balance of power in the West, setting the stage for an exciting second half of the season.
