Lakers and Clippers to play at home on Monday despite ongoing LA fire outbreak

The Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers were gearing up for their return to NBA competition on Monday, as firefighters continued to combat extensive wildfires that have resulted in at least 16 fatalities and left thousands displaced from their homes.

The NBA had previously postponed the Lakers' matchup against the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday, as well as the home games for both the Lakers and Clippers on Saturday, citing a desire not to divert resources from the ongoing wildfire response efforts.

However, both teams were set to host games on Monday, with the Lakers facing the San Antonio Spurs and the Clippers taking on the Miami Heat.

The Lakers announced the initiation of a donation drive at their upcoming games at Crypto Arena, encouraging fans to bring both food and non-food items for distribution to those impacted by the fires.

With over 100,000 individuals still under evacuation orders, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue was asked during practice whether he believed it was appropriate to proceed with Monday's games.

"It's above my pay grade," Lue responded. "I trust that the NBA has a solid understanding of the situation and what actions are necessary. They are the ones making the decisions."

"They are aware of the challenging circumstances we are facing in California and are considerate of that."

"Hopefully, we can provide some joy with the return of the game tomorrow," he continued, "and bring some smiles to people's faces during these difficult times."

Lakers coach JJ Redick, whose residence was among those destroyed in the Palisades fire, echoed similar sentiments this week while describing the "complete devastation" in his community.

Both teams have maintained their training sessions, despite the impact on players, coaches, and staff.

Authorities issued warnings on Sunday regarding the potential for renewed strong winds expected to begin on Tuesday, which could lead to "extreme fire behavior and life-threatening conditions."

Search and rescue operations in the fire-affected areas are just commencing, and officials are actively working to prevent looting.

Lue expressed, "The situation is extremely challenging. Individuals are facing the loss of their homes, schools, and even lives. It becomes quite difficult to concentrate on basketball when the realities of life extend far beyond the sport."
