Lance Stroll quickest in Chinese GP practice after small track-side fire

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll set the pace in the first and only practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday, outperforming McLaren's Oscar Piastri and championship leader Max Verstappen.
Stroll, the Canadian driver, capitalized on the improving track conditions towards the end of the 60-minute session and enhancements to his car to clock a rapid lap time of one minute and 36.302 seconds. He finished 0.327 seconds ahead of Piastri and 0.031 seconds ahead of Verstappen.
Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull secured the fourth spot in Shanghai, followed by the Haas duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, who benefited from significant car upgrades.
A notable surprise was the underwhelming performance of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who could only manage 13th and 14th places respectively in their Ferraris, nearly two seconds off the pace.
Formula 1 returns to China after a five-year hiatus, featuring a packed schedule that includes a Saturday sprint race and the debut of the sport's first Chinese driver, Zhou Guanyu.
The morning practice session served as the sole preparation ahead of the sprint qualifying on Friday afternoon, despite a brief delay due to a trackside fire that required marshals to intervene.
Local favorite Zhou, who was a young spectator at the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix in 2004, delighted the crowd as he made his home debut in the bright green Sauber. Zhou impressed with an 11th place finish, ahead of both Ferraris, Lewis Hamilton, and George Russell.
Hamilton, the winner of the last race in Shanghai in 2019, struggled on hard tires and finished in 18th place, just behind Russell and over two seconds adrift of Stroll's time.
Verstappen, who is yet to claim victory in Shanghai, arrived with an impressive record of winning half of all races since the last Chinese Grand Prix in 2019.
Most of the excitement unfolded in the final minutes of the session as the track, which had not been raced on for five years, began to rubber in.
Alex Albon's Williams surprisingly took the lead with a time of one minute and 37.158 seconds during a qualifying simulation run with five minutes remaining, only to drop down to eighth place.
This season, the sprint weekend features a new format.
Sprint qualifying, previously held on Saturday mornings, now takes place as the second session on Fridays.
The sprint race will kick off the action on Saturday, followed by the usual qualifying session for Sunday's grand prix.
These changes allow teams to make adjustments to their car setups after the sprint race in preparation for GP qualifying, a practice that was not permitted before.
"I believe that the new sprint format is an improvement as it also provides more opportunities to fine-tune the car," Verstappen commented. "It all seems to make more sense now."
