Laporte's Header Secures Victory for Al Nassr in the Asian Champions League

Aymeric Laporte (30) netted the decisive goal with nine minutes remaining, securing a 1-0 victory for Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr against Esteghlal of Iran in Dubai on Tuesday.

This victory underscores the dominance of the high-spending Saudi Pro League clubs during the league phase of the Asian Champions League Elite.

With this win, the Riyadh-based team accumulates seven points from their first three matches, placing them two points behind their fellow Saudi clubs, Al Hilal and Al Ahli, who currently lead the standings in the restructured continental club tournament.

Al Wasl trails by an additional point after the United Arab Emirates side staged a comeback to defeat Qatar's Al-Gharafa 2-1 in Doha. Ferjani Sassi had given the home team the lead just before halftime, but Fabio Lima equalized with six minutes to go, and Isaac Success scored the winner two minutes into stoppage time, marking Al Wasl's second victory in three outings.

In Dubai, Al Nassr faced challenges from a determined Esteghlal squad, which had to play on neutral ground due to security issues in Iran. Goalkeeper Seyed Hossein Hosseini kept Stefano Pioli's side at bay until the 81st minute, when he deflected a header from Ronaldo, allowing Laporte to capitalize on the rebound and score.

This victory positions Al Nassr favorably for progression to the knockout stages of the tournament, where the top eight teams from the 12-team leagues in both eastern and western Asia will advance.

The round of 16 is scheduled to take place in March, while the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final will be conducted as single matches in Saudi Arabia during April and May.
