Laver Cup 2025 Explained: Format, Teams, Captains, Rules and Prize Money

The Laver Cup is one of tennis’ most exciting innovations, bringing together some of the world’s best men’s players for a unique three-day team competition. Named in honor of Australian legend Rod Laver, the tournament sees Team Europe face off against Team World in a battle of skill, strategy and pride.

Since its launch in 2017, the Laver Cup has become a standout event on the tennis calendar, attracting global stars and producing dramatic moments unlike any other tournament. The 2025 edition, the eighth in its history, takes place from September 19–21, 2025, at the Chase Center in San Francisco, just two weeks after the US Open.

Team Captains and Leadership

One of the unique elements of the Laver Cup is the presence of iconic tennis figures as team leaders.

  • Team Europe will be captained by Yannick Noah, with Tim Henman as Vice Captain.
  • Team World will be led by Andre Agassi, supported by Patrick Rafter as Vice Captain.

The captains are not just ceremonial figures. Their role includes:

  • Selecting players and lineups
  • Providing tactical guidance during matches
  • Coaching courtside
  • Ensuring every player contributes over the three days

In short, the captain’s strategy can be decisive in reaching the 13 points needed to win the Laver Cup.

How Players Qualify

Each team is made up of six players:

Three automatic qualifiers – the highest-ranked players from each region (Europe and the rest of the world) based on ATP singles rankings after Roland-Garros.

Three captain’s picks – chosen at the discretion of the team captain and announced no later than the US Open.

Additional rules:

  • Each team can name up to two alternates.
  • If a top-three player declines to participate, the invitation passes to the next highest-ranked player.
  • Any player announced early, before Roland-Garros, counts as a captain’s pick if they don’t qualify through rankings.

Player Compensation and Prize Money

Laver Cup is not just about pride, players are rewarded for their participation:

  • Appearance fee – every player receives a fee based on their ATP ranking after Roland-Garros.
  • Winning bonus – each player on the victorious team earns $250,000. The losing team does not receive prize money.

Tournament Format and Rules

The Laver Cup unfolds over five sessions across three days (Friday to Sunday).

Match rules:

  • Singles and doubles are best of three sets with ad scoring.
  • If sets are split, a 10-point match tiebreaker decides the winner.
  • Each player must play at least one singles match in the first two days.
  • No player can play more than two singles matches in the event.
  • At least four players must appear in doubles.
  • Doubles pairs cannot repeat, except in a possible decider.

Scoring system:

  • Wins on Day 1 are worth 1 point.
  • Wins on Day 2 are worth 2 points.
  • Wins on Day 3 are worth 3 points.
  • First team to reach 13 points is crowned champion.

If the score is tied at 12–12, a special overtime doubles decider is played to determine the winner.

Lineup announcements:

  • Friday’s matches are announced Thursday afternoon.
  • Saturday’s matches are announced one hour after play ends on Friday.
  • Sunday’s matches are announced one hour after play ends on Saturday.

Venue and Rotation

The Laver Cup alternates between cities in Europe and the rest of the world.

  • The 2025 edition takes place at the Chase Center in San Francisco, home of the Golden State Warriors.
  • The tournament runs from September 19–21, 2025, adding another chapter to this high-profile tennis showdown.

Why the Laver Cup Matters

The Laver Cup has carved out a special place in men’s tennis because it combines the intensity of individual matches with the atmosphere of a team event. With legends like Agassi, Noah, Henman and Rafter guiding some of the game’s best players, the 2025 edition promises drama, strategy and world-class tennis on American soil.
