Lazio 0-2 Inter Milan: Inter cruise past Lazio to open up a four-point lead at the top

Inter Milan extended their lead at the top of Serie A to four points with a 2-0 win over Lazio on Sunday, thanks to goals from forwards Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram.

Inter lead the league standings with 41 points from 16 games, having won seven of their last eight games, and have extended their lead over second-placed Juventus (37), who were held to a 1-1 draw at Genoa on Friday.

It was Inter's first Serie A victory at the Stadio Olimpico since October 2018.

Lazio got off to a fast start, dominating possession and aggressively repelling Inter's attacks.

However, Lazio defender Adam Marusic gave away the ball while attempting to pass it backwards, and Martinez latched on to it to dribble past keeper Ivan Provedel and score from close range in the 40th minute.

The Argentine forward scored his 15th league goal of the season, six more than second-placed Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi.

After the break, Lazio pushed for an equalizer, and Rovella came close from inside the box but was denied by goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The hosts were reduced to ten men four minutes before the end when defender Manuel Lazzari was shown a straight red card for a remark he made to the referee after Lazio were denied a free kick.

Sommer, who has now gone 11 games without conceding, is the first goalkeeper in the three-point era (since 1994-95) to record at least 10 clean sheets in his first 15 Serie A matches.

In the big five European leagues, no team has kept more clean sheets than Inter this season.

Lazio are 11th in the table with 21 points.
