LeBron James becomes oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double

Deep into his 23rd NBA season, LeBron James continues to redefine what longevity looks like in professional basketball. The 41-year-old superstar became the oldest player in league history to record a triple-double during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 124-104 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. At 41 years and 44 days old, James surpassed a record that had stood for more than two decades.

The previous mark belonged to Karl Malone, who posted a triple-double at 40 years and 127 days in 2003 during his final season. James reached the milestone late in the fourth quarter when he secured his 10th rebound with just over two minutes remaining. He finished with 28 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds before exiting to a standing ovation from the home crowd. It was the 123rd regular-season triple-double of his career, fifth-most in NBA history.

When playoff performances are included, James now owns 152 triple-doubles — another reflection of his sustained all-around dominance.

More than just a record

While career milestones have become routine for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, this one carries added weight. James has often described triple-doubles as a reflection of total impact rather than scoring volume. Against Dallas, he influenced every phase of the game, facilitating early offense, controlling tempo and finishing efficiently around the rim.

“I guess I’m more appreciative of moments like this in my career,” James said afterward, acknowledging his position in the later stages of an unprecedented career. Triple-doubles are not new territory for him, but doing it at 41 underscores the rarity of his conditioning and basketball intelligence.

Dominance from the opening tip

With Dallas star Luka Dončić sidelined by a hamstring strain, James set the tone early. He erupted for 14 points and six assists in the first quarter alone, directly contributing to 23 of the Lakers’ opening points.

By halftime, he had already compiled 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds. The assists reached double digits in the third quarter, leaving rebounding as the final hurdle. He remained on the floor late into the fourth to secure the milestone.

At one point, teammate Austin Reaves unintentionally grabbed a rebound that could have sealed the triple-double earlier, drawing playful frustration from the Lakers bench. Moments later, James secured the record himself.

Sustained Excellence in Year 23

James entered the contest averaging 21.8 points, 6.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds this season. Despite missing 18 games due to injury, his impact when available has remained elite.

The Lakers continue to battle in the crowded Western Conference playoff race, having played only a limited stretch with James, Dončić and Reaves all healthy at the same time.

Notably, James had not recorded a triple-double since February 1, 2025, a game overshadowed by the blockbuster trade that brought Dončić to Los Angeles. Thursday’s performance marked a return to that statistical territory, but in record-breaking fashion.

Breaking a 22-Year Benchmark

Karl Malone’s record had stood since November 28, 2003. In the years since, countless stars have attempted to extend their careers deep into their 40s. None have maintained James’ level of all-around productivity. James has flirted with the record multiple times over the past year but fell just short, until now.

His achievement also comes just days before another milestone moment, as he prepares to appear in his 22nd All-Star Game. Although he is ineligible for All-NBA honors this season due to missed games, his performance level when healthy continues to justify his selection among the league’s elite.

The Bigger Picture

Longevity in the NBA is typically measured in seasons played. James’ career, however, is being measured in sustained excellence. Year 23 is no farewell tour. It remains a season of relevance, playoff contention and record-breaking output.

For a player who has already rewritten scoring history and redefined durability standards, becoming the oldest player to record a triple-double is less about chasing numbers and more about reinforcing a legacy built on versatility.

At 41, LeBron James is still not merely participating. He is producing — at a historic level.
