LeBron James could miss up to two weeks with groin strain: What It Means for the Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is expected to be sidelined for up to two weeks with a strained left groin, according to a source familiar with the situation. The injury, sustained during the Lakers' 111-101 loss to the Boston Celtics, is a significant setback as the team pushes for a high seed in the Western Conference playoff race.

LeBron James’ Injury: How Bad Is It?
James suffered the injury in the fourth quarter against the Celtics after putting up 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists. He exited the game with 6:44 remaining, and while the severity of the strain is still being assessed, James himself has provided reassurance.
"I've been there before, and I know what type of injury you're dealing with," James told reporters. In 2018, James suffered a similar groin injury that sidelined him for 17 games. However, he emphasized that this time, "it's not as bad as that."
Lakers’ Playoff Push in Jeopardy?
The Lakers (40-22) currently sit in third place in the Western Conference, trailing the Denver Nuggets (41-22) by half a game, while holding a 1.5-game lead over the Memphis Grizzlies (38-23) and a 2-game cushion over the Houston Rockets (38-24).
With only 20 games remaining, every win matters as the Lakers fight for the No. 2 seed. They have been in red-hot form, going 20-5 since January 14, but LeBron’s absence could disrupt their momentum.
How Luka Doncic Will Lead Without LeBron
James' injury also comes at a crucial time in the Lakers' chemistry-building process with Luka Doncic, who was acquired from the Dallas Mavericks before the trade deadline. Doncic, who scored 34 points and grabbed 8 rebounds against Boston, has meshed well with the team but still has room to improve, particularly in his shooting efficiency.
With LeBron out, Doncic will take on a bigger leadership role, especially in playmaking and offensive production.
Who Steps Up in LeBron’s Absence?
The Lakers are also missing Rui Hachimura (left knee injury) and Jaxson Hayes (bruised right knee), adding further strain to the rotation. As a result, coach Darvin Ham will likely give more minutes to:
- Dalton Knecht (Rookie, expected to step up in scoring)
- Gabe Vincent (Backup guard with a strong defensive presence)
- Dorian Finney-Smith (Key defensive player who will need to contribute offensively)
Hachimura, who had developed strong on-court chemistry with Doncic, is expected to be out for at least another week, making the next few games even more challenging.
What’s Next for the Lakers?
With James sidelined, the Lakers’ depth will be tested in the upcoming matchups. Can Doncic and the supporting cast keep the team afloat in the race for a top playoff seed?
