Liverpool 0-3 Atalanta: Reds slump to shock Anfield defeat in UEFA Europa League quarter-final first-leg

Atalanta shocked the footballing community by securing a 3-0 triumph at Anfield in their first leg quarter-final match against Liverpool in the UEFA Europa League. This victory extended their extraordinary unbeaten streak of 11 matches away from home in this competition.

European evenings and Anfield are synonymous, yet despite the renowned ambiance often linked with such nights, the Kop was nearly silenced within five minutes.

Harvey Elliott was caught off guard in his own half, and after Gianluca Scamacca passed the ball to the unmarked Mario Pasalic, a crucial save from Caoimhin Kelleher kept the scoreline even.

Maybe that initial mistake spurred Elliott on, as he was soon active at the opposite end, striking a magnificent shot that hit the post and crossbar before bouncing away to safety.

To their credit, Atalanta remained unfazed by the mounting pressure from Liverpool and matched them blow for blow.

The Italian side eventually reaped the benefits shortly before halftime, as Davide Zappacosta broke free down the right and found Scamacca in the box. Despite his weak effort, it slipped under the typically reliable Kelleher.

Unfazed by his earlier blunder, the Reds' goalkeeper came to the rescue just before the half-time whistle when Teun Koopmeiners found himself unmarked behind the defense. Kelleher stood firm to deny his chipped attempt.

After witnessing enough, Jurgen Klopp made a triple substitution at halftime, and Mo Salah's introduction almost paid off immediately with a powerful shot saved by Juan Musso.

Salah likely believed the tide was turning in their favor, but an Atalanta counterattack left them facing an uphill battle as Scamacca scored from Charles De Ketelaere's cross.

Liverpool failed to react much to this setback, putting on a dismal display throughout the match - a sentiment echoed by a passionate Klopp on the sidelines.

Their luck didn't improve as even when Salah finally found the back of the net, the linesman's flag halted his celebrations. Adding insult to injury, Atalanta scored a third goal late in the game when Pasalic tapped in from close range after Kelleher's initial save.

No one could have foreseen Atalanta taking a commanding three-goal lead back to Bergamo before the match started. However, they have dampened Klopp's farewell season and put Liverpool in a precarious position, facing the possibility of elimination.
