Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid: Reds defeat short handed visitors as Mbappe's struggles persist

Liverpool emerged victorious in a UEFA Champions League clash between two footballing powerhouses, defeating Real Madrid 2-0. This marked only the second occasion in their last eight encounters that the Reds have managed to avoid defeat against the Spanish giants.
Raul Asencio made a notable entrance on his Champions League debut, successfully navigating the pressure as Darwin Nunez surged forward, unleashing a shot that Thibaut Courtois deflected onto the center-back, who subsequently cleared the ball off the line.
Although scoring opportunities were scarce in the opening 20 minutes, the match was characterized by a fierce competitive spirit. Both Asencio and Nunez received yellow cards following a confrontation in the penalty area, while Virgil van Dijk made his presence felt with a robust shoulder challenge on Kylian Mbappe.
Nunez remained a key figure, seizing a loose ball in the box but was thwarted by the advancing Courtois. Conor Bradley, addressing pre-match concerns regarding his ability to contend with Mbappe, executed a remarkable tackle on the French star just before Nunez narrowly missed with a header.
Shortly thereafter, Luis Diaz had his header denied by Courtois, and Curtis Jones sent a shot over the bar as Liverpool continued to apply pressure. However, Alexis Max Allister received a booking for a cynical foul on Arda Guler, which will result in his suspension for the next match.
Following the halftime interval, Liverpool maintained their attacking momentum, with Eduardo Camavinga deflecting Jones’ effort wide and Courtois making an impressive save to deny Bradley’s header.
The breakthrough for the Reds came shortly after, as Max Allister executed a one-two with Bradley, sending a shot that tantalizingly eluded Courtois.
Caoimhin Kelleher, who had not faced a single shot on target throughout the match, astonishingly outsmarted Mbappe during the penalty shootout in the 61st minute, following Lucas Vazquez's fall under the challenge from Andy Robertson.
Mohamed Salah, however, failed to convert his penalty, sending his shot wide of the post after skillfully maneuvering past Ferland Mendy to earn the opportunity.
Nevertheless, Liverpool secured their second goal just six minutes later, as Cody Gakpo elevated above the defenders to head in a cross from Robertson, ensuring that the Reds maintained their flawless Champions League record this season and remained at the top of the standings.
Additionally, they dealt Real Madrid their third consecutive defeat in European competition, leaving the team in 24th place, which is the last position for playoff qualification.
