Liverpool 2-1 Wolves: Salah on target as Reds survive Wolves scare

Liverpool bolstered their pursuit of the Premier League title by securing a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking their 16th win in the last 17 encounters in the top flight.

With a comfortable lead prior to the match, Liverpool could have potentially absorbed a minor setback in their title ambitions; however, the primary objective against Wolves was to secure all three points.

The match commenced with Liverpool displaying an aggressive intent to claim those points, creating a promising opportunity within the first ten minutes. Unfortunately, Diogo Jota, a former Wolves player, could only send his volley just wide after a well-executed combination between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Liverpool did not have to wait long to establish their lead, albeit through somewhat fortunate circumstances. A misdirected clearance from Toti Gomes fell to Luis Diaz, who managed to nudge the ball into the net with his midriff, granting Liverpool the advantage.

Diaz continued to be a persistent threat to Wolves at Anfield, setting up Jota in the penalty area, but a remarkable last-minute block from Emmanuel Agbadou thwarted the opportunity.

The first half was characterized by relentless Liverpool pressure, and it appeared inevitable that they would extend their lead to two goals. This eventuality materialized just before halftime, as Mohamed Salah converted a penalty after Jose Sa brought down the influential Diaz in the box.

Matheus Cunha did come close to responding for Wolves, with a free-kick that initially seemed promising but ultimately veered inches wide. Wolves had a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when Marshall Munetsi broke free on goal, but he was thwarted by a superb save from Alisson.

The visitors were nearly subjected to a harsh lesson in football when Alexander-Arnold found Salah, who finished with precision, only for the offside flag to intervene and spare Wolves from further embarrassment. The officials were kept busy throughout the match, once again finding themselves at the center of controversy just before the hour mark.

Simon Hooper awarded a penalty when Agbadou's reckless challenge caused Jota to fall in the box; however, after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, he reversed his original call.

Wolves capitalized on this reprieve, managing to score when Cunha executed a remarkable shot into the net in front of the Kop.

Arne Slot’s team displayed an unusually lackluster performance in the second half, never appearing at ease with their slender one-goal advantage. Nevertheless, they managed to hold on and secure a vital three points in the title race, restoring their seven-point lead.

The defeat was largely anticipated for Wolves, leaving them precariously positioned just above the relegation zone.
