Liverpool cruise past Sparta Prague in Europa League round of 16 first-leg

Liverpool made significant progress towards the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League following a resounding 5-1 triumph over Sparta Prague in the initial leg of their last-16 encounter at Stadion Letna.

Sparta, competing in the Europa League round of 16 for the first time since 2015/16, understood the importance of a quick start in front of their enthusiastic home supporters.

Liverpool, on the other hand, took the initiative right from the beginning, and their early dominance paid off within the first five minutes when Alexis Mac Allister was fouled inside the penalty area by Asger Sorensen.

Taking charge of the penalty kick, the Argentine confidently beat Peter Vindahl Jensen to give the away team a vital lead.

Despite this setback, Sparta came close to equalizing shortly after when Lukas Haraslin's close-range attempt was brilliantly saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brian Priske's team continued to search for a goal, but Liverpool extended their lead in the 25th minute with Darwin Nunez's long-range shot catching Jensen off guard.

The match in Prague was intense and competitive, with both teams creating numerous opportunities. Liverpool scored a third goal just before half-time, as Nunez struck a fantastic half-volley into the top corner.

Following a challenging three-goal deficit, the home team managed to reduce the gap within a minute of the second half starting when Birmancevic's pass was accidentally redirected into his own goal by substitute Conor Bradley.

Nevertheless, the away team quickly responded with a goal of their own, with Luis Diaz's shot from close range being deflected past a helpless Jensen.

After an intense first hour, the game settled into a calmer pace as it approached the final stages, with Jurgen Klopp providing Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah with valuable playing time in preparation for a crucial match against Manchester City over the weekend.

Despite this, there was still enough time for the Hungarian player to score a fifth goal in stoppage time, marking Liverpool's emphatic victory and breaking an 11-game winless streak in away knockout matches in the Europa League.
