Liverpool star Diogo Jota and brother die in car crash

The football world is in profound mourning following the devastating news that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother, André Silva, 26, have died in a horrific car accident in northern Spain. The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, just two weeks after Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso.

Reports from the Spanish Civil Guard indicate that the brothers were traveling in a Lamborghini supercar on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, close to Zamora, when a tire is believed to have blown out during an overtaking maneuver. The car veered off the road, rolled, and subsequently burst into flames. Emergency services, alerted at approximately 12:35 AM local time, responded swiftly but were unable to save the two men.

A statement from the 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room confirmed the accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, noting that the vehicle was on fire and that two fatalities were confirmed at the scene by medical personnel. The Portuguese Football Federation, in a statement from its head, Pedro Proenca, expressed utter devastation, describing Jota as "much more than an amazing player... an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself."

Liverpool Football Club echoed this sentiment, releasing a statement confirming the tragic news and expressing that the club is "devastated" by the loss. "Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss," the club shared on Instagram.

The heartbreaking incident comes just days after Jota celebrated one of the happiest moments of his life. He married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children and his partner since they were 16, in Porto on June 22. In what tragically became his final Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon, Jota shared moving footage from their wedding day, describing himself as the "lucky one" to be her husband. Rute had also shared wedding pictures a day prior, captioning them "My dream come true," to which Jota had affectionately replied.

Diogo Jota was a pivotal member of Liverpool's Premier League-winning side in the recently concluded 2024/25 campaign, contributing six goals in 26 appearances. On the international stage, he was an integral part of the Portugal national team, recently celebrating their UEFA Nations League triumph last month after an extraordinary penalty shootout victory over rivals Spain. His untimely death leaves an immense void in both club and international football.

The A-52 is a critical route for drivers heading from northern Portugal towards major Spanish ports and destinations further north-east, including France. Investigations into the precise cause of the accident are ongoing.

He had recently completed the 2024-25 season with Penafiel, contributing to their 11th-place finish in Liga Portugal 2
