Liverpool stunned by late Palace winner as Man United and Chelsea also suffer Premier League defeats

Liverpool’s perfect start to the Premier League season came to an abrupt end on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at Crystal Palace, conceding in the eighth minute of stoppage time. On a dramatic day across the league, Manchester United fell 3-1 at Brentford while 10-man Chelsea collapsed to a 3-1 defeat at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.

At Selhurst Park, Palace went ahead in the ninth minute through Ismaila Sarr and looked dangerous throughout, with Jean-Philippe Mateta striking the post. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson produced key saves to keep the champions in the contest before Federico Chiesa equalised late in the 87th minute. However, substitute Eddie Nketiah stole the headlines with a 97th-minute winner, confirmed by VAR, to send the home fans into raptures. "The boys are in really good form and think we can win every game and today we showed that," Nketiah told the BBC. The result left Palace second in the table, three points behind Liverpool, though Arsenal could leapfrog them with victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Manchester City surged into the top four after thrashing Burnley 5-1. Maxime Esteve endured a nightmare afternoon by scoring two own goals, becoming only the sixth player in Premier League history to do so. City’s other strikes came from Matheus Nunes and a late brace from Erling Haaland, while Burnley briefly equalised through Jaidon Anthony.

At Brentford, Manchester United were punished early as Igor Thiago netted twice in the opening 20 minutes, the first assisted by Jordan Henderson and the second following a rebound from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for United, but Bruno Fernandes saw a penalty saved before Mathias Jensen sealed the win with a stoppage-time thunderbolt. "We didn't control the game, we played the game of Brentford. We were really confused (on) second balls, first balls, set pieces," United manager Ruben Amorim admitted. "The crucial moments, they were against us. Tough to lose again."

Chelsea’s frustrations deepened at Stamford Bridge when Trevoh Chalobah was sent off early in the second half, reducing them to 10 men against Brighton. Enzo Fernandez had put the hosts ahead, but Danny Welbeck equalised before Maxim De Cuyper’s 92nd-minute header turned the game. Welbeck then struck again in the 100th minute to secure a famous Brighton victory.

Elsewhere, Leeds United were pegged back to a 2-2 draw by Bournemouth after 19-year-old Eli Junior Kroupi volleyed in during stoppage time. Sunderland climbed to fourth with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest thanks to Omar Alderete’s first-half strike, leaving Ange Postecoglou still winless as Forest boss. Wolves thought they had their first victory of the season at Tottenham after Santiago Bueno’s goal, but Joao Palhinha equalised in added time to earn Spurs a 1-1 draw and third place on goal difference.
