Lorenzo Musetti beats Taylor Fritz to make maiden Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon

The Italian, seeded 25th, is now aiming to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot and world number one Jannik Sinner as a major champion this year, but faces a tough challenge against seven-time All England Club champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Musetti expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, "I'm really happy about what I've achieved today. Happy about the way I fought until the end. I found a way to develop my game set after set. It was really a big reaction from me in the fifth. I probably played my best tennis of the week."

Despite having beaten Djokovic once in six encounters and pushing him to five sets in their recent match at Roland Garros, Musetti will need to bring his A-game against the experienced Serb. The young player demonstrated resilience against Fritz, especially after falling behind early in the match.

Fritz, the champion of Eastbourne, showcased his powerful forehand and serve under the sunny skies, impressing the Court One fans with his baseline rockets. He managed to take the lead in the match with an ace.

After exchanging breaks at the beginning of the second set, Musetti, the runner-up at Queen's Club, took a 5-3 lead. Despite Fritz closing the gap, the Italian elevated his game to win the tiebreak.

Musetti utilized a variety of shots, including chips and slices, to force Fritz into making uncharacteristic errors, allowing him to cruise through the third set with two breaks.

Musetti commented, "It's probably more challenging for the opponents when each shot is different. Especially when facing a strong baseliner like Taylor, playing flat every time won't lead to winning points. I adapted my strategy to mix up my shots and take control of the game."

During certain moments of the match, Musetti felt confident from the baseline, believing he could win every point with his diverse shot selection.

Despite dropping a set, Musetti raised his game to secure a victory. In challenging conditions with shadows covering the court and windy weather, Musetti dominated the decider with a 5-0 lead and closed out the match on serve as Fritz hit a long shot after an awkward fall at the net.

Musetti's next challenge will be facing Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, who advanced to his 13th Wimbledon semi-final after Australian player Alex De Minaur withdrew due to a hip injury.

Musetti mentioned that he has faced his opponent multiple times on various stages, including big ones. He mentioned that he emerged victorious once in Monte Carlo but was defeated in the other encounters. He also reflected on their recent match at Roland Garros, which concluded in the early hours of the morning in Paris.

He also stated that after playing against his opponent, he always learns a valuable lesson. The last match was described as intense and stressful for both players.

Musetti admitted that playing against his opponent causes more stress, as he is considered one of the best players in the history of the sport. He also mentioned that he approaches the game with a different mentality when facing such a formidable opponent, and believes that he has a chance to advance to the next round if he plays a certain way.
