Los Angeles Sparks cut ties with coach Curt Miller after 2 losing seasons

Curt Miller has departed from his position as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks following the franchise's failure to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year, and the second time during his tenure.
On Tuesday, the team announced Miller's termination, indicating that both parties had "mutually agreed to part ways."
The Sparks, who have secured three WNBA championships, will commence their search for a new head coach without delay.
This past season, the team recorded a league-worst 8-32, grappling with numerous injuries, including to rookie Cameron Brink. Over Miller's two seasons, the team's record stood at 25-55. Notably, this season, Dearica Hamby received All-Star recognition and was awarded the Associated Press Most Improved Player, while Rickea Jackson earned a spot on the AP All-Rookie Team.
Miller's overall record as a head coach in the WNBA is 165-141, which includes a previous tenure with the Connecticut Sun. He was honored as the WNBA Coach of the Year in 2017 and was the league's inaugural Executive of the Year during his time as general manager of the Sun.
He guided Connecticut to the WNBA Finals in 2019, where they were defeated by Washington, and the Sun reached the Finals again in 2022, losing to Las Vegas. Notably, he was the first openly gay male coach in both college and professional basketball when he joined the Sun.
Miller, who will celebrate his 56th birthday next month, served as an assistant coach for the Sparks in 2015.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the entire Sparks organization for the chance to lead and assist in the revitalization of the franchise,” Miller stated in a release from the team.
“I take pride in the culture fostered within our locker room and firmly believe that a solid foundation has been laid for a promising future. The team is now well-equipped for success, and I extend my best wishes to the players as they approach the 2025 season.”
