LOSC Lille 3-4 Olympique Lyonnais: Lyon stage stunning late fightback to beat Lille in seven-goal thriller

Lyon staged an impressive comeback in the second half to secure a 4-3 victory over Lille, marking their fourth win in five matches in Ligue 1. This recent success puts Les Gones on the verge of a potential late push for European football.

Lille started the game strongly and almost took Lyon by surprise in the fourth minute when Gabriel Gudmundsson stole the ball from Clinton Mata near the visitors' goal line. However, Jonathan David's shot from Gudmundsson's pass was well saved by Anthony Lopes.

But on the 21st minute, Bafode Diakité rose above everyone else to flick Yusuf Yazıcı's long free-kick into the top corner, leaving Lopes helpless.

Yazıcı had to be substituted just five minutes later due to an injury, and his replacement Edon Zhegrova immediately had a chance on goal, but Lopes made a good save.

After Alexandre Lacazette missed a header from Mata's cross, Zhegrova punished Lyon for a poor short goal kick. The ball was intercepted by David, who passed it to Zhegrova, and the Albanian international calmly buried it into the corner from outside the box on the 37th minute.

Lyon, who had only lost to Paris Saint-Germain in their last eight matches, came out stronger in the second half.

On the 65th minute, Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent through on goal by Nemanja Matic and combined with Lacazette to set up Said Benrahama, who finished with precision into the top corner. The goal was confirmed by VAR after the linesman's flag was proven to be incorrect.

Boosted by this goal, Pierre Sage made attacking substitutions, and two of them combined to equalize on the 82nd minute. Mama Balde left Ismaily behind with his speed down the right flank, and his pass was stabbed home by Malick Fofana at the back post.

However, Lyon's vulnerability from set pieces was exposed again on the 85th minute as Diakite, unmarked, scored a powerful header from Angel Gomes' corner.

Incredibly, the goals kept coming, and the game swung once again on the 88th minute. Two former Arsenal players, Maitland-Niles and Lacazette, combined as Maitland-Niles found Lacazette, who finished into the roof of the net from close range.

Lyon were unsatisfied with a draw and capitalized on their momentum to secure all three points in stoppage time, with Balde heading in Mata's cross to elevate his team to seventh place, just two points away from the European positions.

Brest currently hold onto the final automatic Champions League qualification position, ahead of Lille.
