LOSC Lille 6-1 Feyernood: Lille thrash Feyernood to seal top-eight spot

LOSC Lille overcame consecutive defeats to advance to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Round of 16 for only the second time since 2007, achieving a resounding 6-1 victory over Feyenoord in their final league phase match, aided by three own goals.

The home team, having suffered losses to Strasbourg and Liverpool in their previous two matches, had an excellent opportunity to take the lead within the first minute. Osame Sahraoui, however, failed to capitalize on a shot that he sent wide from close to the penalty area.

Shortly thereafter, the Morocco international redeemed himself by scoring a low shot from a challenging angle, following a perfectly timed run onto a defense-splitting pass.

At the other end, Lucas Chevalier was called into action, successfully denying Igor Paixao. However, he was unable to prevent the visitors from equalizing from the subsequent corner, as Santiago Giménez found the net from close range after Gernot Trauner's knock-down.

Despite this setback, the majority of the attacking play was dominated by Lille, with Thomas Meunier having a shot saved and Mitchel Bakker and Remy Cabella both missing the target.

Their persistence paid off when Trauner inadvertently scored an own goal, redirecting a deflected cross from Sahraoui into his own net, giving Lille a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Feyenoord's situation worsened due to injuries, with both Giménez and goalkeeper Justin Bijlow forced to leave the field.

The second half saw further misfortune for the Dutch side, as Bruno Genesio’s team extended their lead with another own goal, this time from David Hancko, who accidentally turned an Angel Gomes cross into his own net, effectively extinguishing any hopes of a comeback for Feyenoord.

Jonathan David netted a fourth goal, skillfully cutting inside the penalty area and striking into the bottom corner, thereby becoming Canada’s all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League.

At this point, the floodgates had truly opened. Moments later, Sahraoui provided another assist with a low cross that was inadvertently turned into the net by Trauner, marking his second own goal of the evening. The sixth goal followed shortly after, with Cabella heading in another flick from Sahraoui.

This outcome relegates Feyenoord to a play-off position as they aim for their first appearance in the last 16 of this competition. However, they will not be seeded, having finished outside the top 16, while Lille celebrated their largest victory in European football history.
