Luis Suarez hit with six-match ban after spitting incident in Leagues Cup Final

Inter Miami forward Luis Suarez has been handed a six-match suspension after spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member during a heated melee that followed the Leagues Cup final. The incident unfolded on 31 August after Inter Miami’s 3-0 loss to Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final. Tensions boiled over at the full-time whistle when Suarez, visibly frustrated, sparked a melee between both sets of players.

According to reports, the 38-year-old striker first grabbed Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas by the neck, before Miami teammate Sergio Busquets struck Vargas on the chin. Moments later, Suarez confronted Seattle’s director of security Gene Ramirez and, while being restrained by goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, spat in Ramirez’s face. The unsavoury act led to widespread condemnation and prompted swift action from tournament officials.
Disciplinary Sanctions
The Leagues Cup disciplinary committee announced Suarez’s punishment on Friday, confirming a six-match suspension. However, the ban applies only to next year’s edition of the Leagues Cup, not MLS fixtures. Major League Soccer added that it “reserves the right” to impose further disciplinary measures.
Other sanctions were also handed out:
- Sergio Busquets – three-game suspension
- Tomas Avilés – two-game suspension
- Steven Lenhart (Seattle coaching staff) – five-game suspension
The ruling underlines the league’s attempt to clamp down on violent and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Suarez issues apology
Following the backlash, Suarez took to Instagram to apologise for his behaviour, admitting his emotions got the better of him. The veteran forward, who has often been admired for his competitive spirit, acknowledged that the spitting incident “did not represent who I am as a person or professional.”
A career marred by controversy
While Suarez is one of the most prolific strikers of his generation, his career has been overshadowed by high-profile disciplinary issues:
- 2011 (Liverpool) – Eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.
- 2010, 2013, 2014 – Three separate biting incidents while playing for Ajax, Liverpool, and Uruguay.
- Multiple suspensions for unsporting behaviour across domestic and international football.
Despite his glittering career with clubs like Liverpool, Barcelona, and Atlético Madrid, Suarez remains one of football’s most polarising figures.
What’s Next for Inter Miami?
The ban means Suarez will miss six matches in the 2025 Leagues Cup, a significant blow for Miami’s star-studded squad featuring Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.
MLS fans will now watch closely to see if the league chooses to extend the suspension into domestic competition. With Suarez nearing the twilight of his career, incidents like this only add more controversy to an already dramatic legacy.
