Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving shine as Mavs stretch series lead over Timberwolves

Luka Doncic (25) and Kyrie Irving (32) combined for a total of 66 points, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 116-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA Western Conference final. This win gives the Mavericks a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.
The game in Dallas was another thrilling encounter, following the Mavericks' narrow victories in the first two games in Minneapolis.
In the fourth quarter, which saw the lead change hands seven times, Doncic and Irving stepped up and spearheaded a crucial 12-3 scoring run. Their performance was instrumental in securing the win for the Mavericks. The team will now have the opportunity to clinch the series when they host game four on Tuesday.
While the Mavericks are in a strong position, Doncic emphasized the importance of staying focused and not underestimating their opponents. He acknowledged the Timberwolves' talent and stated that the Mavericks need to remain determined to secure one more victory.
Both Doncic and Irving had impressive individual performances, each scoring 33 points. Doncic also contributed seven rebounds and five assists, while Irving showcased his skills in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points during that period. P.J. Washington made a significant contribution with 16 points, including a crucial three-pointer that gave Dallas the lead for good.
Defensively, Daniel Gafford played a key role for the Mavericks, blocking three shots, including a notable rejection on Mike Conley in the final minute. On the Timberwolves' side, Anthony Edwards led the team with 26 points, but struggled to make an impact in the fourth quarter. Karl-Anthony Towns also had a difficult quarter, missing all four of his attempts.
Looking ahead, the winners of this series will face either the Boston Celtics or Indiana Pacers in the NBA Finals. The Celtics currently hold a 3-0 lead in their Eastern Conference final against the Pacers.
Doncic highlighted the physicality of the game, with the Timberwolves attempting to smother him and Irving. However, he noted that this defensive strategy actually energized the Mavericks' offense. The team responded by sharing the ball and executing their plays effectively.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch acknowledged that defense was not the issue for his team.
Finch expressed his frustration, emphasizing the breakdown of their offense as the primary issue. "Throughout the series, closing games has been a struggle for us," he lamented. "These short bursts of intense play are slipping away from us."
A tense matchup saw the Mavericks suffer a setback in the second quarter when rookie Dereck Lively exited early after taking a blow to the back of his head from a leaping Towns.
The concerning incident prompted Mavericks coach Jason Kidd to rush onto the court to check on Lively, who had already endured a painful hit to the groin from Towns during an earlier attempt to defend under the basket.
Despite trailing by as much as 12 points in the second quarter, the Timberwolves managed to trim the deficit to eight by halftime and eventually drew level in the third period.
An impressive one-handed dunk from Edwards narrowed Dallas' lead to 77-73 midway through the third quarter. He followed it up with two remarkable step-back shots, tying the game before Naz Reid's basket gave Minnesota their first lead since the opening minutes, making it 79-77 with under four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The score was deadlocked at 87-87 going into the final period, but Dallas managed to edge ahead after a series of lead changes, ultimately securing victory.
