Luka Doncic named FIFA World Cup 2026 Los Angeles Ambassador

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic has officially been named a Community Ambassador for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Los Angeles, joining basketball legend Magic Johnson in promoting the world’s biggest sporting event in the city.
“I’m proud to serve as a community ambassador for the World Cup in Los Angeles,” Doncic said. “The World Cup is the biggest event in sports, so I’m very excited. I’ve watched soccer since I was a kid, and I still do. It’s definitely a big part of my life.”
The 26-year-old Slovenian, who grew up watching football before becoming one of the NBA’s brightest stars, described Los Angeles as a city that perfectly reflects the tournament’s diverse and global spirit.
“I think LA is a very nice city. We’ve got a lot of culture. Soccer is becoming more and more popular in the U.S., especially in LA,” he said. “The culture here makes it the perfect city to host the World Cup.”
Uniting Cultures Through Sport
Doncic also spoke about the unifying power of sports, saying major tournaments like the World Cup bring people together in a way few events can.
“Sports can bring out the best in people, especially the World Cup. Everybody comes together to watch it and see the best players represent their countries. Because of that, it inspires not only kids but everyone. I’m very excited to be an ambassador for it.”
FIFA praised Doncic as someone who “captures both the spirit of the tournament and the international energy of Los Angeles.” A lifelong Real Madrid supporter, Doncic’s love for football is well-known, and his participation adds to the growing excitement as the 2026 World Cup approaches.
Los Angeles Set for a Global Stage
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted across 16 cities in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with Los Angeles among the key venues. Several matches will take place in the city, which has a long history of hosting major sporting events and a passionate multicultural fan base.
With Doncic and Magic Johnson representing Los Angeles, FIFA hopes to use their influence to inspire fans and communities ahead of the most expansive World Cup in history.
