Luton Town 1-0 Newcastle: Luton stun Magpies to claim third win of the season

Luton secured a hard-fought 1-0 win against Newcastle at Kenilworth Road, halting the Magpies' impressive 16-match undefeated run against newly promoted teams in the Premier League (W9, D7).

The Magpies' struggles on the road continue in the league, managing only one win in their last 10 Premier League away matches. With a number of key players missing and recent disappointments in the UEFA Champions League and League Cup, it was expected that Newcastle would have a slow start.

However, after some initial pressure from Luton, the visitors grew into the game and came close to scoring through Callum Wilson on two occasions.

Luton, who had only failed to score in one of their previous eight home games, improved on their impressive record by taking the lead from a corner. Former Magpie Andros Townsend headed in Ross Barkley's flick-on and showed support for absent captain Tom Lockyer by holding up his shirt.

With the momentum on their side, Luton could have extended their lead before halftime as Barkley hit the crossbar and Elijah Adebayo forced a save from Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle were lucky not to be two goals down early in the second half when Jacob Brown hit the underside of the crossbar. As the game progressed, Newcastle started to assert themselves and put pressure on Luton. Bruno Guimaraes had a good opportunity but missed the target, and substitute Alexander Isak had a goal disallowed for offside.

Luton remained resilient, causing Newcastle to make mistakes and making it difficult for them as time ran out.

Ultimately, Eddie Howe's side had no response and now find themselves in seventh place in the Premier League table, with a seven-point gap to fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

On the other hand, Luton secured a hard-fought victory in their battle against relegation, closing the gap to Nottingham Forest in 17th place to just two points.
