Luton Town 2-3 Chelsea: Blues survive late scare to edge past hosts as Palmer shines yet again

Since 2011, the Blues have remained undefeated in their final league game of the calendar year (W8, D4). They wasted no time in asserting their dominance, with Noni Madueke testing Thomas Kaminski within the first five minutes.

The Belgian goalkeeper was called into action once again to deny Nicolas Jackson, but Luton's Issa Kabore's errant pass fell into the path of Cole Palmer, who rifled the ball into the far corner to open the scoring.

After weathering some pressure from Luton, Chelsea showcased a clinical edge that has been lacking in 2023. They swiftly countered, with Madueke receiving the ball from Palmer on the right. After shifting the ball onto his weaker foot, the winger slammed it high into the net at the near post, scoring his first goal for the Blues from open play.

The introduction of Tahith Chong and Chiedozie Ogbene injected renewed energy into the hosts' performance, but creating scoring opportunities proved to be a challenge. Dorde Petrovic, Chelsea's goalkeeper, remained a spectator for large portions of the game, even as Chong's low cross narrowly missed a touch from a Luton attacker.

Luton's inability to convert their chances in front of goal would soon be punished by another lethal Chelsea attack. Assisted by Jackson, Palmer showcased his impressive skills by rounding Kaminski and maintaining composure in the face of multiple challenges before slotting home his second goal.

Despite the relentless pressure from Chelsea, Rob Edwards' men never gave up. Elijah Adebayo came close to scoring, hitting the bar from point-blank range, before Ross Barkley headed home what seemed to be a consolation goal in the 80th minute.

Carlton Morris followed suit, hitting the woodwork with his header, but Adebayo was there to slam home the rebound after Alfie Doughty's shot was brilliantly saved by Petrovic, dramatically reducing the deficit to one goal.

The spectators were left in awe, as Luton's relentless attack kept the pressure on, but Chelsea managed to stand their ground and finish 2023 on a positive note. This victory also denied the Hatters any chance of escaping the relegation zone.
