Luton's Lockyer returns to individual training after cardiac arrest

Luton Town's captain, Tom Lockyer, aged 29, has resumed individual training following a cardiac arrest that nearly claimed his life. During a Premier League match against Bournemouth in December, Lockyer's heart ceased functioning for two minutes on the field.

The Welsh international experienced a similar episode during the 2023 Championship playoff final against Coventry. Nevertheless, Lockyer remains optimistic about returning to his playing career and has taken a significant step in his recovery by returning to training.

A statement from Luton on Tuesday expressed, "We are delighted to announce to our supporters and everyone worldwide who has shown their support that our captain, Tom Lockyer, has today returned to The Brache training ground to commence the next phase of his rehabilitation."

"Tom has been receiving care from top consultants in London and Amsterdam, where he has been undergoing the latest phase of his rehabilitation at a specialized clinic..."

"While continuing his rehabilitation, Tom will also collaborate with the British Heart Foundation to promote the importance of CPR awareness and the use of defibrillators, as he now shifts his focus entirely to the next stage of his recovery."

Luton Town faced relegation from the Premier League last season and suffered a 4-1 defeat at home to Burnley in their first match of the new Championship season on Monday.
