Lyon 2-2 Man Utd: Andre Onana errors haunt Red Devils in Europa League draw against Lyon

Manchester United surrendered a late lead in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Olympique Lyonnais on Thursday night, as goalkeeper Andre Onana was at the center of two critical errors in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg at the Groupama Stadium.

United looked poised to secure a hard-fought away victory after substitute Joshua Zirkzee’s 88th-minute header restored their advantage. However, a fumble deep into stoppage time from Onana gifted Rayan Cherki an equalizer that left the tie hanging in the balance ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.

Onana Under Fire After Almada Howler

The Cameroonian shot-stopper, already under scrutiny following a controversial pre-match exchange with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic—now playing for Lyon—was at fault for both of Lyon’s goals. In the 38th minute, Thiago Almada’s tame free-kick inexplicably slipped through Onana’s gloves to give the hosts the lead.

Onana, who was labeled “one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history” by Matic during the heated build-up, struggled to silence his critics on the night. Lyon fans jeered the keeper throughout the match, amplifying the pressure.

United Fight Back but Falter at the End

Teen sensation Leny Yoro equalized just before halftime, heading in after Manuel Ugarte redirected Bruno Fernandes' delivery back into the danger area. The goal marked Yoro’s first for the club, injecting fresh momentum into United’s attack.

Despite second-half chances for Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro, and Alexandre Lacazette, the game remained tense until Fernandes whipped in a sublime cross in the 88th minute, which Zirkzee powered home.

But United’s celebrations were cut short. Onana failed to hold a low shot from Georges Mikautadze, allowing Cherki to stab home the rebound in the dying seconds.

Champions League Hopes Hanging by a Thread

With their Premier League campaign faltering, winning the Europa League has become United’s most realistic path to qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. A failure to secure European football could reportedly cost the club over £100 million, further complicating their financial restructuring.

A Stark Contrast to the Glory Days

This clash marked the first meeting between United and Lyon since the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League Round of 16—a time when both clubs were title contenders in their respective leagues. United went on to lift the trophy that season, while Lyon were the dominant force in French football.

Now, both teams are rebuilding, and this tie reflects their transitionary phases. For United, players like Rasmus Hojlund, whose goal tally in Europe (5) outweighs his Premier League strikes (3), underscore the inconsistency that has defined their season.
