Madagascar 0-3 Ghana: Black Stars edge closer to World Cup qualification with dominant win over hosts

In a commanding exhibition of football skill, determination, and experience, the Black Stars have greatly enhanced their prospects of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup by defeating Madagascar 3-0 in Morocco on Monday evening. This decisive win follows their remarkable 5-0 triumph over Chad just a few days earlier.

Under the guidance of Otto Addo, the team, which arrived in Morocco on Saturday, quickly adapted despite having limited preparation time. They transitioned from the effective 4-1-4-1 formation utilized against Chad to a 5-3-2 formation, incorporating Jerome Opoku and Francis Abu into the starting lineup in place of Inaki Williams and Ernest Nuamah.

The Black Stars commenced the match with enthusiasm, nearly scoring early on from a free kick taken by Jordan Ayew, which found an outstretched Mohammed Salisu, who was unable to direct his attempt on goal.

It was Thomas Partey who ultimately broke the stalemate, capitalizing on Ayew's delivery from a similar position to put Ghana ahead.

Despite this early advantage, Ghana found it challenging to sustain their momentum as Madagascar gradually grew in confidence, although they did not pose a significant threat by halftime.

In the second half, Ghana regained their rhythm, with Partey doubling their lead once more, this time converting from an Ayew corner kick.

The match was concluded when Mohammed Kudus netted the third goal, ending a year-long scoring drought with the national team. Kudus' goal was expertly set up by Ayew, who finished the match with a hat-trick of assists.

A series of substitutions from both teams indicated a mutual acceptance as the Black Stars comfortably secured the vital three points.

This victory extends Ghana's lead at the top of Group I to five points, placing them in a strong position for qualification with four matches still to play.

The Black Stars will next compete against Chad in September, with the goal of achieving their fifth World Cup appearance.
