Magdalena Frech beat Olivia Gadecki in Guadalajara to seal first WTA title

Magdalena Frech, aged 26, secured her inaugural WTA tour title on Sunday by defeating Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki, 22, with a score of 7-6(5), 6-4, in Guadalajara. This victory marks a significant achievement in what has been a breakthrough season for the Polish player, currently ranked 43rd.

Frech previously reached her first singles final at a clay court tournament in Prague last month, followed by her first hard court quarter-final in Monterrey, culminating in her first hard-court final at this 500-level event.

The first set was tightly contested, with neither player managing to break serve. At 5-5 in the tiebreak, Gadecki made a critical error by sending a service return wide, allowing Frech to gain a set point, which she capitalized on following another forehand mistake from Gadecki.

Although Gadecki achieved the first break of the match at the start of the second set, Frech responded by securing a crucial break to lead 5-3. Despite a brief struggle to serve out the match, Frech ultimately broke Gadecki again to clinch the victory.

Upon receiving her trophy, Frech expressed her joy to the audience, stating, "I just want to say that dreams do come true," while attempting to balance a large sombrero that accompanied her award. "This is my first WTA title, and it is truly amazing," she added, recalling her previous victory at a lower-tier event in Massachusetts in 2021.

This win prevented Gadecki, ranked 152nd, from claiming the title in her first tour-level final, which included notable victories over former US Open champion Sloane Stephens and second-seeded Danielle Collins. Gadecki's performance as a runner-up will enable her to enter the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.
