Mallorca 0-1 Atletico Madrid: Riquelme's first-half strike earns narrow win for Los Colchoneros

Atletico Madrid closed in on a Champions League spot with a 1-0 win over Mallorca in LaLiga on Saturday, thanks to winger Rodrigo Riquelme's early goal.

With four games remaining, Diego Simeone's team are fourth in the standings with 67 points, six ahead of Athletic Bilbao.

Runaway leaders Real Madrid won a record-extending 36th LaLiga title earlier on Saturday after Girona rallied to defeat Barcelona 4-2, giving Carlo Ancelotti's side an unbeatable lead in the standings.

Real defeated Cadiz earlier on Saturday and now lead Girona by 13 points, while Barcelona have dropped to third place with 73 points.

The half-empty Son Moix stadium had an end-of-season feel to it, with both teams lacking urgency in a lacklustre match, with the only standout moment being Riquelme's fine individual effort in the fifth minute, which secured the visitors' win.

Riquelme pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box, beating two defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot just inside the right post.

"It was very important to win", Atletico defender Axel Witsel told Movistar Plus+.

"We wanted to win and stay six points ahead. We have to keep it up. After Riquelme made that fine control and scored a fantastic goal, we managed to stay well organised to secure the result."
