Malmo 2-2 Galatasaray: Hosts strike late to earn dramatic draw against Galatasaray

Malmö remains in the race to qualify for the UEFA Europa League (UEL) knockout stage, thanks to a last-minute equalizer that secured a 2-2 draw against Galatasaray at Eleda Stadion, thereby halting a streak of five consecutive home defeats in the tournament.
In a match where Malmö was battling for their UEL survival, they made an assertive start. An early opportunity arose when Otto Rosengren delivered a ball over the top to Anders Christiansen, who unfortunately shot over the goal from within the area.
This served as a warning that Galatasaray did not heed, as Malmö took a well-deserved lead in the 24th minute. A failed clearance from Galatasaray allowed Jens Stryger to deliver a cross to the unmarked Erik Botheim, who headed the ball in off the far post, breaking the hosts' five-match goal drought at home in the UEL.
Without the injured Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray appeared far from the dominant team that had led the pre-match statistics for shots attempted. However, just two minutes before halftime, the momentum shifted in their favor.
Kerem Demirbay won possession deep on the left side and passed to Elias Jelert, who calmly rolled the ball past a stationary 17-year-old Joakim Persson, marking Galatasaray's 21st goal in their 23 competitive matches this season.
The second half began with both teams showing determination, although Yunus had reason to feel aggrieved when a penalty appeal was dismissed.
Galatasaray continued to apply pressure and were rewarded for their efforts. A turnover in possession led to a well-executed sequence between Dries Mertens and Yunus Akgun, culminating in a shot from the latter that slipped beneath the ill-timed dive of Malmö’s young goalkeeper.
Malmö's head coach, Henrik Rydström, remained composed during the match, opting to make only a single substitution at that moment.
There was also a noticeable absence of urgency from the Swedish team, as they failed to apply consistent pressure on their opponents, allowing Michy Batshuayi to have an attempted shot blocked by a vigilant defender.
He eventually found the back of the net during a chaotic goalmouth scramble with fifteen minutes left on the clock, but his celebrations were abruptly halted by the offside flag.
As Fernando Muslera executed a remarkable save at the near post from Malmö substitute Taha Ali, it appeared that the Turkish side was poised to secure the win.
However, a dramatic turn of events unfolded in the second minute of the five minutes of added time. A series of unsuccessful clearances from the Galatasaray defense created an opportunity for Sergio Peña, who surged forward and struck the ball high into the top-right corner, hitting the post and ensuring a crucial point for Malmö in their efforts to avoid elimination from the UEFA Europa League.
