Man City 1-0 Southampton: Haaland lifts Manchester City to the top of Premier League

Manchester City extended their club-record unbeaten streak in the Premier League to an impressive 32 matches with a narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton.
For a Southampton team yet to secure a win, facing the formidable Manchester City was always expected to be a challenging endeavor. This was underscored just five minutes into the match when Erling Haaland netted his customary goal.
However, this goal did not reach the heights of his spectacular midweek effort against Sparta Prague; instead, he managed to outmuscle Jan Bednarek and slot the ball home from six yards following a delivery from Matheus Nunes.
Shortly after assisting the opening goal, Nunes came close to scoring himself, narrowly missing the opportunity to mark his first league start with a goal as he sent a shot just wide from within the penalty area.
Credit must be given to Southampton, who, despite conceding early, displayed commendable resilience and defended steadfastly for the remainder of the first half.
The second half did not alter the flow of the match, and the game was nearly put out of reach for the Saints shortly after the restart, as Phil Foden sent a shot just inches wide of the goal.
A second goal appeared to be on the horizon, and it should have materialized when Savinho's skillful play on the wing set up Haaland at the far post; however, he astonishingly missed from just a few yards out.
The same pair linked up again shortly after the hour mark, but the result was unchanged, as Haaland’s header from the Brazilian’s cross was neither a shot on goal nor an attempt to assist a teammate.
This miss kept doubts alive, yet in reality, City remained comfortable, as the Saints displayed a lackluster attacking performance that posed no threat throughout the match.
In the end, City secured their 11th victory in the last 15 encounters against the Saints without any significant challenges.
The outlook remains quite grim for Southampton, and while they understand that their season will not be determined by this match alone, the longer their winless streak continues, the greater the pressure will mount on Russell Martin, who is increasingly seen as a likely candidate for the first managerial dismissal of the 2024/25 season.
