Man City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade: Alvarez's Brace Seals Victory in UCL Opener

In a thrilling start to their Champions League title defense, Manchester City fans were treated to an early wake-up call when Red Star Belgrade's Osman Bukari shocked the Etihad Stadium with a first-half lead. While this momentary stumble may have raised doubts, City ultimately rallied to secure a 3-1 victory. Julian Alvarez played a pivotal role, scoring twice to set City on the path to victory. Rodri, who was instrumental in City's European triumph last season, sealed the deal with a third goal.

Despite City's first-half dominance and numerous goal-scoring opportunities, they struggled to breach Belgrade's resolute defense, with goalkeeper Omri Glazer making key saves. However, Bukari's goal underscored the unpredictability of the Champions League.

Manager Pep Guardiola emphasized the importance of a comeback mentality for a team that won the treble last season. City is aiming to become only the second club to retain the Champions League trophy in the competition's modern era, with Real Madrid being the sole team to achieve back-to-back victories in 2016-18.

Guardiola acknowledged the fierce competition in the Champions League, where errors can be costly. Bukari's goal, against the run of play, exemplified this point. While the opening goal was initially ruled out for offside, VAR intervened, granting Belgrade the lead just before halftime. City had maintained an unbeaten home record in the Champions League since 2018 and extended it to 27 games with this victory.

Alvarez, who combined effectively with Erling Haaland, equalized early in the second half, showcasing his nimble footwork and finishing ability. He later scored his second from a free-kick that eluded Glazer, cementing his status as a crucial attacking threat.

Rodri's clinical strike further bolstered City's comeback, securing the victory. However, the match was not without concerns for City, as Bernardo Silva sustained an injury in the first half, rendering him unavailable for upcoming fixtures, according to Guardiola.
