Man City rout Palace to send title message as Villa extend stunning winning run

Manchester City reignited the Premier League title race with a commanding 3–0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the summit to just two points. Elsewhere, Aston Villa underlined their credentials as genuine contenders by twice coming from behind to defeat West Ham, while Nottingham Forest stunned Tottenham and Sunderland edged a fiery Tyne-Wear derby.

City find their rhythm as Haaland delivers again

With Arsenal scraping past Wolves on Saturday thanks to two own goals, the pressure was squarely on Manchester City to respond, and Pep Guardiola’s side did just that.

Crystal Palace began brightly and looked the more threatening side early on. Oliver Glasner’s men carved out chances and nearly took the lead when Yeremy Pino struck the crossbar, having rounded City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

City weathered the storm, and as champions so often do, struck decisively. Erling Haaland, quiet for much of the first half, rose highest to head home a precise Matheus Nunes cross, netting his 101st Premier League goal just before the interval. It marked his sixth goal in four league games, watched on by England manager Thomas Tuchel.

The visitors sealed the points late on when Haaland smashed home a penalty after Savinho was brought down by Dean Henderson, completing a ruthless performance that suggested City are once again shifting through the gears at the business end of the season.

Villa show title-winning mentality in London comeback

Aston Villa arrived at the London Stadium riding a remarkable wave of form, having won nine of their last ten league matches, but their resilience was tested immediately.

West Ham stunned the visitors after just 29 seconds, when Mateus Fernandes dispossessed Ezri Konsa and fired into the net. Villa responded swiftly, with John McGinn’s cross deflected into his own goal by Konstantinos Mavropanos to restore parity.

The Hammers regained the lead midway through the match through Jarrod Bowen, only for Villa to claw their way back once more. Morgan Rogers equalised early in the second half before delivering the decisive moment in the 79th minute, unleashing a stunning long-range strike that dipped beyond the goalkeeper to secure a 3–2 victory.

The result leaves Villa just one point behind Manchester City and five clear of Chelsea in fourth, reinforcing Unai Emery’s side as serious players in the title conversation.

Forest punish Spurs as pressure mounts

Tottenham’s struggles continued with a humbling 3–0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, deepening concerns around manager Thomas Frank, who is enduring a difficult first season in charge.

Former Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi struck twice, while Ibrahim Sangare added a superb third to cap a dominant display from Forest and pile further pressure on Spurs, who have managed just one win in their last six league matches.

Sunderland edge Derby return against Newcastle

In a fiercely contested Tyne-Wear derby, the first Premier League meeting between the sides in nearly a decade, Sunderland claimed a narrow 1–0 victory over Newcastle.

The decisive moment came shortly after the break when Newcastle forward Nick Woltemade inadvertently headed Nordi Mukiele’s cross into his own net, handing Sunderland a famous derby win.

The result lifted Sunderland to seventh place, marking another significant milestone in their return to top-flight football.

What’s Next

Brentford host Leeds in the late kick-off, while attention now turns to a tightly packed top of the table, where momentum appears to be swinging back in Manchester City’s favour.
