Man City thrash Chelsea to go 11 points clear as Kerolin inspires statement WSL win

Manchester City delivered one of the most emphatic performances of the Women’s Super League season with a ruthless 5-1 demolition of Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium, opening up an 11-point lead at the top of the table and tightening their grip on the title race.

Against the six-time reigning champions, City produced a devastating blend of pace, precision, and relentless attacking football, headlined by a stunning hat-trick from Kerolin. Further goals from Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw and Vivianne Miedema capped a result that sent a clear message across the WSL.

City’s relentless winning run gathers pace

The victory extended City’s remarkable WSL winning streak to 13 consecutive matches, a run that dates back to September 2025 and now stands as one of the most dominant sequences in league history.

In the process, head coach Andrée Jeglertz etched his name into the record books by setting the longest winning run ever achieved by a manager in their debut WSL season. The Swede has already collected three consecutive WSL Manager of the Month awards, and his side is now just one win away from matching the league’s all-time record of 14 straight victories, currently shared by City and Arsenal.

With momentum firmly on their side, City are not only closing in on records but also on a long-awaited WSL title.

Kerolin steals the spotlight

In a match filled with standout performances, Kerolin’s display was simply unplayable. The Brazilian forward registered her first hat-trick for Manchester City and made history by becoming the first player to score three goals against the reigning WSL champions in a single match.

Her clinical finishing took her to ten goal involvements in just eight appearances across all competitions this season. Even more impressively, Kerolin currently leads the WSL for goal involvements per minute in the 2025/26 campaign, contributing a goal or assist every 42 minutes from her 382 league minutes so far.

It was a performance that underlined her growing influence and importance in City’s title charge.

Chelsea’s defensive wall shattered

The scale of City’s achievement becomes even clearer when set against Chelsea’s defensive credentials coming into the match. Before kick-off, the London side boasted the best defensive record in the WSL, having conceded just eight goals all season. That resistance collapsed under City’s sustained pressure, with five goals shipped in 90 minutes at the Etihad.

Chelsea had also arrived unbeaten in their previous 19 away league matches, a run stretching back nearly two years. City not only ended that streak but did so in emphatic fashion, exposing vulnerabilities rarely seen from the reigning champions.

Dutch connection seals the rout

City’s fifth and final goal was crafted by a familiar Dutch partnership, as Kerstin Casparij and Vivianne Miedema combined to put the finishing touch on a dominant afternoon. Casparij continues to set the standard among defenders, leading the WSL assist charts this season with six and boasting more than double the goal involvements of any other defender in the league.

Miedema, meanwhile, has been equally influential. The Netherlands international has created 28 goalscoring chances this season, bettered only by Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey and London City Lionesses’ Kosovare Asllani. With six league goals and five assists, only Bunny Shaw has more overall goal involvements in the WSL this campaign.

Title momentum firmly with City

With Bunny Shaw adding to her league-leading goal tally and City dismantling the champions in such commanding fashion, this result may come to be seen as a defining moment in the 2025/26 WSL season.

An 11-point lead, a record-chasing winning run, and attacking firepower across the pitch suggest Manchester City are setting the pace, and the standard, in the race for the title.
