Manchester United’s late show saves a point...and one fan’s hairline

Manchester United didn’t quite get the fifth straight win they were chasing, and Frank Ilett didn’t quite get the haircut he’s been waiting nearly 500 days for. Instead, football delivered something far more familiar: late drama, lingering hope, and a storyline that refuses to end.
A 1–1 draw away at West Ham may have brought United’s winning streak to a halt, but it extended their unbeaten run under interim boss Michael Carrick and, crucially, kept the club’s most unusual side quest alive.
For Ilett, the lifelong United fan who vowed not to cut his hair until the club won five league games in a row, the scissors stay in the drawer. For now.
From Fourth Win to Fifth-Win Fever
United’s momentum had been building steadily. A composed 2–0 home win over Tottenham Hotspur marked their fourth consecutive league victory, a run that felt almost mythical after the turbulence of the past 18 months.
Carrick’s return to the Old Trafford dugout was initially met with raised eyebrows. His Middlesbrough spell ended quietly, and his previous interim stint at United lasted just three matches in 2021. But results have a way of rewriting narratives.
Under Carrick, United look organised, calmer and perhaps most tellingly, normal. The Manchester Evening News described it as the first time since the post-Ferguson era that the side resembles a functioning team again.
That sense of stability was enough to spark belief not only in the stands, but on social media, where Frank Ilett’s hair began trending almost as reliably as United’s league form.
A Haircut, A Charity, and 490 Days of Patience
Ilett’s challenge began back in October 2024, during the chaotic final weeks of Erik ten Hag’s tenure. What started as a joke to lift spirits during another false dawn slowly turned into an online phenomenon.
Based in Spain but born in Oxford, Ilett documented the journey on Instagram, where his following ballooned past 330,000. His afro-style hair grew alongside United’s frustrations, surviving the Amorim era, transfer splurges that didn’t click, and a Europa League final defeat.
The deal was simple: five wins in a row, haircut done, hair donated to the Little Princess Trust, a charity supporting children who lose their hair through illness.
Four wins arrived. One more to go.
West Ham, Resistance, And a Late Twist
West Ham, sitting 18th and fighting for survival, had other ideas. They allowed United the ball, stayed compact, and waited for moments. One arrived early in the second half when Tomáš Souček turned in Jarrod Bowen’s cross to give the hosts the lead.
United pushed. Possession piled up. Chances did not.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Carrick’s perfect start looked set to end and Ilett’s hair to enjoy another few weeks of freedom.
Then Benjamin Šeško intervened.
The striker, introduced from the bench, produced a clever flick in the 96th minute to level the score and rescue a point. The away end erupted. Carrick remained unbeaten. And the haircut storyline lived on.
More than just a Gag
Inside the club, the mood remains upbeat. Reports suggest players are well aware of Ilett’s vow, with some joking that it’s time to finally let him visit the barber. Training ground morale is said to be high, fuelled by results and a renewed sense of direction.
United stay fourth in the table. West Ham remain two points from safety. And while the winning run has paused at four, the bigger picture still feels positive. As for Frank Ilett, the wait continues — with good humour intact. Football has delayed the punchline once again. And honestly, it feels right on brand.
