Manchester City 1-1 Everton: Haaland misses from the spot as Toffees claim hard-earned point

Manchester City’s difficulties persisted as they settled for a 1-1 draw at home against Everton in the Premier League, with the sole silver lining being that this result extended their unbeaten streak in head-to-head encounters to 16 matches.
Despite their recent struggles, the prospect of facing City at the Etihad remained intimidating for Everton. This was underscored within the first five minutes when Joško Gvardiol struck the post with a powerful header.
However, this moment of relief for Sean Dyche’s side was short-lived, as they soon fell behind. Jérémy Doku delivered a precise ball into the box, finding Bernardo Silva, whose shot, deflected, eluded the desperate dive of Jordan Pickford and nestled into the far corner.
At that juncture, it was always going to be challenging for the Toffees to regain their footing, although Idrissa Gana Gueye made a commendable effort, unleashing a fierce half-volley that was comfortably saved by City’s substitute goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega.
City, however, did not heed the warning from Everton and quickly relinquished their lead. Iliman Ndiaye capitalized on a failure to clear the ball, collecting Abdoulaye Doucouré’s cross at the far post and unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner.
Everton could not afford to relax against the reigning champions, yet that message seemed to elude Vitalii Mykolenko, who fouled Savinho in the penalty area shortly after the second half commenced.
In a twist of misfortune for City, the usually dependable Erling Haaland had his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford. Moments later, Gvardiol headed the rebound into Haaland’s path, but the Norwegian was ruled offside as he scored.
Despite the challenges faced by his team, Pep Guardiola waited until the 75th minute to make substitutions, largely due to a bench filled with inexperienced players.
The first player introduced was Kevin De Bruyne, yet he was unable to significantly alter the match's dynamics. To further complicate matters for Guardiola, Nathan Aké was forced to leave the field due to injury late in the game.
A home draw against Everton serves as yet another stark indication of Manchester City's recent decline, with little evidence to suggest that their dismal performance will improve in the near future, as they momentarily rise to sixth place.
Conversely, the outlook is more favorable for Everton, who have suffered only one defeat in their last seven matches, albeit with five of those resulting in draws, which positions the Toffees at 15th in the Premier League standings.
