Manchester City 2-0 Everton: Haaland scores twice as City defeat Toffees to go top

Erling Haaland netted his first Premier League goals since the end of November, propelling Manchester City to a decisive 2-0 victory over Everton at the Etihad. This triumph not only solidified the Sky Blues' dominance in the title race but also prolonged the Toffees' winless streak to seven matches in the league.

City fans have had every reason to be hopeful as their team has been in outstanding form recently. However, early openings from Everton indicated that securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title might not be as straightforward as anticipated.

Pep Guardiola's side had not held the top position since November, but they gradually gained control of the game. The performance of Phil Foden, who scored a hat-trick on Monday, started to pose problems for the visiting team.

Despite Sean Dyche's touchline ban, Everton's defense remained resolute, having achieved the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season. As a result, City only had a few half chances.

During an enterprising run, Jeremy Doku failed to find Erling Haaland with a pass, and Matheus Nunes' shot on the counter-attack was deflected over the goal.

On the other end, Jack Harrison missed a rare opportunity, firing over the goal and keeping the score level at halftime.

City's performance did not improve when the second half began. However, the introduction of Kevin De Bruyne brought about a change in fortunes, and 20 minutes before the end of the match, the Sky Blues finally took the lead with their first shot on target.

Following a corner kick, the ball bounced around the penalty area, and Haaland was there to volley it into the net, marking his first goal since returning from injury.

Everton made a brief attempt to find an answer, but their defensive stability faltered, allowing De Bruyne and Haaland to launch a swift counterattack. Haaland outpaced Jarrad Branthwaite and scored his second goal, delivering a decisive blow in the match.

This victory not only surpasses last season's draw against their local rivals but also propels the reigning champions to the top of the standings, at least temporarily.

In the meantime, Dyche eagerly anticipates his return to the sidelines as his team prepares to face Crystal Palace, aiming to secure their first win since mid-December.
